I run away from that awful place, the tears stinging my eyes and my raven black hair whipping around in the wind. I could swear that the breeze was talking Don't look back, don't look back. I didn't. I left my mother's lifeless body behind and ran, face pulled into an ugly mask of agony. Who cares? I asked. Nobody does. Don't look back, don't look back. I kept running, my lanky limbs groaning, my lungs burning. And all I could think of was Don't look back, don't look back. No matter how far I ran, the reality outran me, thrashing me in it's steely grip. My ice blue eyes were filmy with tears, and I didn't have any sense of direction. Don't look back, don't look back. Couldn't breathe, couldn't get a word out of my mouth.
My heart was as cold as ice.
Don't look back, don't look back.
This was all just a dream.
Don't look back, don't look back.
All I had to do was open my eyes...
Don't look back, don't look back.
I pushed on harder, harder, all the while reality was mocking me. You can look back Ebony, just look back, and face the pain, you coward. What? No, no no... I was losing! I made a sound that was half animal; what was going on?!? I finally came to a stop, my thin frame wracked with agonizing shudders. This was too much for me to take. I wrung my hands. "Don't look back, don't look back." Then everything went black.
I awoke to a face just over mine. "Mother..." Then, I realized it was my aunt, Anthra. She had a sadness in her deep black eyes. My heart almost came to a stop and I knew what she was going to say. "Charrie, I'm so sorry... but your mother, y-your mother is gone." There was more wrinkles on her face.
The crow‘s feet around her eyes were deeper. What? No, no this was just a dream, just a blindness. "Turn the lights on! Turn the lights on so I can see! Open my eyes!" I laughed and giggled like a lunatic.
I made an insane face, smile stretched over my face, with many teeth but no heart, no reason, nothing. My aunt made a nice smile, smoothed my hair, and slowly pushed me down.
Don't look back, don't look back. And then, pain. More painful than a whipping, more painful than having bullets riddled through your skin. More painful than being burned alive. Pain, pain, pain. Enveloping me, flowing inside of me. It reminded me of my favorite poem. Couldn't remember, couldn't. I was dropping lower, and it was getting dark, darker than the coal that my father used to mine. Used to. A thought came.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.
Wrenched my eyes open. It was a mistake. I exposed myself to the raw pain that had been festering inside my heart. My olive skin stretched taut with pain. The precious, golden earrings that my mother gave me on my 16th birthday tugging at my ears. Ain't nothing special. Just golden rings studded with scrap marble. Cost a month's savings as I recall. Then I remembered. Mother. I heard screaming. Wasn't even sure if it was mine or not. Bunch of people crowding around my bedside. Caught some words. Shock. Crazy. Overdrive. Unstable. My screams faltered, then I let the darkness posses me once more. Ain't wanna see light again. Might as well sleep forever. My thoughts became mush as I drifted off.
Don't look back, don't look back.
