Rabbit stared out the window as the snow fell in huge clumps from the sky. Everything was getting very festive on the ward but the poor girl took little notice to the tinsel and lights going up around her; she was happily sat in her chair staring out the window. It was something she had done everyday since she'd been admitted. The nurses tried to stimulate the poor girl to do other things by sitting her down at tables with other patients but often Rabbit became upset and began to cry until she was returned to her chair.

Today was no exception as the nurses chattered between themselves, discussing ways in which to have the girl join in with the Ratmas fun and games without upsetting her too much. Today was hard for a lot of patients on the ward and it was hard how heavy today was on Rabbit Liddell because- well- she couldn't talk. Or at least choose not too. They all knew her story, from the papers and from her file, but they did not know the true horrors of those days that tore the girl apart piece by piece. Only Rabbit knew the truth.

One of the nurse, approached carefully and placed her hand on the blondes shoulder gently. The girl flinched at the touch- no matter how gentle it was. When she realized that the hand posed no danger to herself, the girl looked up at the nurse with her doe like eyes and just stared blankly at her. Unblinking, the girls blue eyes unnerved the nurse. She spoke softly to Rabbit but gained no response from the girl so after talking to her colleagues, they manged to stand the girl and lead her over to the crafting table.

"Here you go Rabbit...." said the nurse with a comforting smile as she sat the girl down at the table "Why don't you make something pretty??"

The nurse was trying to make Rabbit feel as comfortable as she could but already tears formed in the girls eyes, brimming her lower lid like high tide breaching flood barriers.

The hum slips past my lips, it fills the room, a sound that is gentle, a sound that is calming. A smile pressed to my face as my fingers slide along the shiny tinsel. The nurses said it was for Ratmas, they said that now is a time for happiness, for giving, for sharing, for kindness. Maybe that meant that she was coming, maybe he was finally going to take me home. Maybe this time was my time. My eye so big smile somehow manages to grow even bigger, my eyes almost closed as my humming picked up the beat, my feet beginning to move in a rhythmic way.

I slip down the hallways where nurses growl at me to hush, to not skip but to walk. This goes on for a while before the pretty nurse comes and takes me by the elbow, her eyes smiling. "Now Wilma, you look so pretty and that is a very beautiful tune, but this is the emergency department, you cant just be wandering around down here, the doctors are trying to work. Lets get you back home, mkay." She ways gentle tugging at my arm. I smile at her blankly allowing her to pull me along, the hum of my song slowly turning my sombre as we reach the place which I have waited years for her to return.

"Some of the others are making pretty little ornaments an what not, for Ratmas, how about we join them?"

"Will... I be able to make something for mum?" I ask in a gently, slightly husky voice. It was always a surprise to he nurses to hear my voice, words never usually escaped my lips, only lyrics, or music, but not words. I look up a the kind nurse to see her eyes turn glassy ad her smile falter, for just a moment.

She clears her throat. "Of course, my dear." She says quietly and leads me over to the another girl whom I know to be rabbit. I smile at the girl, the smile not reaching my blank stare. I reach out to touch her on the shoulder and pull away from the nurse and kneel down beside the quiet girl. "Are... are you okay.. Rabbit?"

Rabbit felt like she was about to explode, it was as if someone had shook up a soda bottle without removing the lid, forming a countless number of bubbles inside the bottle and as they grew in number, the pressure began to build and build and build. This is how the poor girl felt, staring at the endless amount of glitter, paper and glue which had been spilt on the table, as the nurse stood over her, watching and waiting. The tears fell down her cheeks- her bubbles was about to burst and the nurse could see it but she did nothing because she wanted Rabbit to make something. The girl who couldn’t form words just looked at the table, fearful, not wanting to join in with the Ratmas fun.

Suddenly, a hand- gentle and soft and caring- touched her shoulder gently. The touch stung though, despite its meaning, and Rabbit flinched slightly at the finger tips touching the cloth of her dress. Turning, blue eyes met a familiar set of hazel ones- just as blank as her own. A small frown formed on her face as she tried to recall where she had seen the brown eyes with flecks of green and orange within them. A flash of memory- a hand, fingers through her hair, a gentle hum. Wilma the name was familiar and became more prominent in Rabbit’s mind as she stared at the girl who knelt beside her and asked if everything was okay.

Was everything okay? Rabbit didn’t know, Rabbit didn’t know how to tell her it wasn’t or tell her if it was, tears streamed down her cheeks still even though the pressure that had been building more and more had subsided and she now felt calm. Rabbit stared at Wilma blankly, her laboured breathing became soft and calm, as she tried to make sense of what the girl had just said but all she thought of was hands running through her hair and a soft humming tune. The blonde reached out her own hand, touching the very tips of Wilma’s hair with her fingertips before withdrawing it quickly; it was as if she had been burnt by the touch of a flame.

“Rabbit’s going to make something-“ the nurse who had been looking after Rabbit spoke up “Why don’t you make something together?”

Rabbit didn’t acknowledge the words, her mind was perhaps to distant to really pay attention to anything other than Wilma.
