I like to think of myself as an enigma-- a closed book--, but to be completely honest and fair, I'm like a reference book at the library that's been left on its stand laying open for the next person to leaf through. Doesn't take much to bare my soul to another person.

And so I hide. Is it really hiding though? Oftentimes, I'm just too busy and I forget to interact with people and before I know it, they've slipped away from me. I'm okay with that sometimes. Well, most of the time. Except that they take a piece of me with them. But I'm used to it, truth be told.

No. Not used to it. I'll never be used to it. I expect it, is more like it. And maybe that's why they always slip away-- because I expect them to.

Laying cards on the table: I don't remember much, which is a problem. I mean, I remember what I read. But your birthday? Nope. The day I first met you? Nope. What I ate for breakfast yesterday? Not even.

It's been so long since I've surfaced, I've forgotten my last name. Probably even my first name. When I emerge from my apartment on occasion, people always say, "Oh Ripred, she looks like Death," and I always thought that was funny, so I guess I kept the name.

The first time I heard it, it really hurt. I wasn't some glowing-red-eyed guy in a black cloak carrying a scythe. So I look in the mirror-- just to make sure I really wasn't, but they were kinda right in their weird way. Dark circles under my near-black eyes all the time. Probably because I stay up so late trying to meet deadlines on projects. My brown hair darker than I'd remembered it to be-- probably because it hadn't seen true sunlight for awhile.

Since then, I've come to accept that a person who only leaves their domicile at night and rarely sleeps long and well is destined to be pale with bags under their eyes. At least the acne seems to have dried up since I was younger.

Stars are my biggest pull-- the thing I love most in this world. That's why I only leave the house at night. I've got this huge bag I have to carry to this open field just a little ways outside of town and every night, I slide the metal contraption out of its casings and I set it up in that field.

While my job isn't lucrative (recording the movement of the stars every night on a map doesn't interest many people), I manage to make ends meet by selling my father's blue prints and medical device blueprints.

Of course, I only sell the smalls ones. They net enough money to mean I only have to auction one off once a year or so and that's plenty of time for me to study them and figure out how it works. Sometimes I'll find scrap and build a prototype to include along with it.

What happened to Papa? And Mama? I don't remember. I have few memories of being a child. Fewer still of my teenaged years and the few years they weren't around and I stayed with who I think was a family friend.

Sometimes, when I lay in bed and close my eyes and think very, very hard and try to focus on the day, I remember sounds. Gunfire and a scream. The crack of a pipe against a head. I think it might've been my head, which would explain a lot, truth be told.

Nowadays, I live alone in this tiny apartment and I make my ramen and my tea. Of course, I go to Reaping Day, but I've made it this long without getting Reaped that I don't need to worry, I think. I have two reapings left to get through and the odds have been in my favor so far.

But, just in case my name ever does come out of the bowl, I've got a super genius plan. Not dying. It's about all you seem to be able to try for when going into something as chancy as the Hunger Games.

Death's family was attacked and killed when she was rather young. Thanks to taking a pipe to the head, the parts of her mind responsible for transferring memories from short-term to long-term have been damaged and have not managed to repair themselves, impairing her in basic memory functions.

She hardly remembers what she did the day before and often feels like her days are endlessly repeating. She has few friends, except for the delivery boy who drops off tea and ramen. A complete night-owl, if you want to talk to or meet you, you have to catch her in the middle of the night.

When she interacts with people, she can be super trolly and doesn't take much seriously. This is kinda because she knows she won't remember the conversation the next time she meets this person. In fact, she'd be lucky if she could remember their face. She's bubbly and happy but prefers to not meet new people because she knows she'll forget about them.

Probably. Most likely. Oh and her history isn't mine. I'm not an orphan or brain-damaged. But I DO have a horrible memory.
