Harper Libertine.

You're... a little out of place in the training center where Andros spends what you deem to be an inordinate amount of his time. With your easy smiles and pastel, moth nibbled sweater, you are an incarnation of fairy dust and springtime sunbeams in a room full of sulking angst monsters and you don't care how many of them know it. A random Career girl sneers at you and you blow her a kiss. Another sharpens a knife while maintaining perfect eye contact and you toss your hair at her and whisper something along the lines of bitch, I'm so flawless that no knife is sharp enough to fuck all this up. Finally there is Andros, with his cheekbones like permanent hieroglyphics of doom carved into his face. You enjoy questioning that permanence. Toying with it. Blowing that fairy dust of yours in his face until he's coughing too much to maintain his guise of indifference. "Believe it or not, I'm pretty good at sword fighting." Your grin curls into something wicked as you pause. "Wanna give it a go, Andy boy?"

It's been weeks since I've won the sabre gold medal at the Olympics and ~~thankfully~~ weeks since I've seen Harper in all of his glory. There have been moments of passing, his laugh lilting around a corner on my way back from training, the tinkling of their shop bell as he bounces inside to work, but there has been no interaction.

I'm not avoiding him.

My sabre makes harder contact with the trainer than I had intended, the man hissing in pain following a solid swipe to his neck. It's a good thing these are dulled on the edge. I watch with a raised eyebrow as he backs away, calling out that he'll be back in a moment.

"Believe it or not, I'm pretty good at sword fighting. Wanna give it a go, Andy boy?"

Christ on a bicycle, think of the demon and he shall appear when least appropriate... I turn on my heel, face blank as he grins at me, eyes challenging. There's never a moment of peace with him.

"I don't play games, Harper. Don't whine when your nails break."

Harper Libertine.

"You wouldn't dare!" You gasp with feigned offense and hold a hand out to make a show of inspecting your nails. It would be a little bit tragic for one of them to break right now, but all is fair in love and war, so you have no choice but to take the risk... with a side of sass. "What a little liar you are," you taunt as you step forward to casually pick up his trainer's discarded sword, "I mean, isn't the reason you waste away all of your time here so you can play a game?" This is punctuated by an accusatory tilt of your head, a quirk of your right eyebrow, and an impish curl of your lips. This too — whatever this is that happens when the two of you are around each other — is a game and Andros is lying to himself about that as well if he pretends otherwise. After all, he just accepted your challenge. He always does.

What fun.

To be honest, when you professed your talent for sword fighting you weren't exactly talking about this kind of sword. You're pretty sure Andros knows that, but he's in denial about too many things for you to fuss over this particular detail. Besides, how hard could it be? The hilt doesn't feel completely foreign in your hand and you can sashay and swish with the best of them. You're from District Four. Everyone is part pirate here. "Remind me, how does this go again?" Up goes the sword and it's all you can do not to giggle. "Oh right. En garde!"

"It wouldn't be my fault if you couldn't defend yourself properly," I hiss, turning to grab my water bottle and take a swig from it. Not sweating has its perks, but dehydration and overheating are not one of them. Most of the other trainees are practically swimming in perspiration, but my skin is dry as the bone that runs underneath.

"Me? Lie? I'm assuming you're an idiot, as usual. It's not a game, Harper, but it's all there is."

I roll my head back, neck popping and relieving the tension that's built up in the matter of minutes since Harper has arrived. It's so draining to be around him, keeping my nose clean, my reputation spotless. I can hardly stand him. It's like he appears at the mere thought, transported by some other-worldly force to keep me on edge at all hours.

"How does this go? Don't get hit."

Harper Libertine.

There's irony in someone attempting to explain to a Libertine that the Hunger Games aren't really a game at all — as if Harper doesn't know that more deeply than Andros could ever understand. "Hunger Games. Games, Andros. It's in the name." It seems backwards with the way he wants to turn sword fighting into checkers, but the walk in took him past too many faces of children aspiring to be kings and queens of... he doesn't fucking know. He just can't think like them. One look and he wants his every thought to be their opposite because otherwise he'd have to think of Klaus Goravich and Peridot Myler as royalty and that might just be enough to permanently reshape his coy grins in Arndros's stone faced image.

"Now don't you try to take any cheap shots at my pretty face, Andy." Pausing, he waggles his eyebrows with comical seduction. "The rest of my body up for grabs though." While Andros pops his neck and puts on his game face, Harper just stands there with one hand holding the sword up and the other fluffing the colorless cotton candy of his hair. "Remember, every injury you give me, you're gonna have to kiss and make better. Don't worry. That goes both ways." There's a step back in preparation as he flourishes the sword around aimlessly for a couple seconds. "I said en garde, like, yesterday. I thought you said you knew what you were doing here." With a patronizing shrug and a game face that is the exact opposite of every other person in this building, the Libertine swings the sword forward, aiming for Andros, but not his blood.
