a note from the desk of
Mace Emberstatt
when you never thought that it could ever get this tough,of District Ten
that's when you feel my kind of love
It was late, well after Mason and Juliet's bed time. He'd waited an extra hour, just to be sure no nightmares sent him scrambling back, and then kissed Julian on the cheek and walked the short path to the Lowe's. Another snowfall had just begun, burying his footsteps from earlier in the day. It didn't matter. He could find Saffron's front door in the pitch black, blind folded and deafened.
He eased it open, hoping her mother and sister were asleep. He didn't want any witnesses to this conversation. He hung up his coat on the rack, snow already sliding off of it onto the hardwood floor. Saffron's house was somehow colder and cleaner than his own. It didn't bother him, but it irked the hell out of Regalia. He removed his shoes but kept on his beanie and scarf. It was too cold a night for anything less, and already he could feel the numbness in his pinkies. The numbness that reminded him.
Arms wrapped around his ribs, he poked his head into the kitchen first, then the den, then the great room, the layout of the house identical to his own. He found her there, in front of the fire, her hair a match for the flames. He snagged two blankets from the pile, passing one to her as a peace offering, holding the other to his chest as he sank into an armchair across from her. His gut twisted at the sight of the indentation in the couch where he normally sat.
He tucked the blanket beneath his chin before he spoke. His voice came out thick, gravelly. "I'm sorry about what I said this afternoon. I didn't mean it like that. You know me." He opened up his mittened hands, a surrender of sorts. "You're not wrong, Saff. I just think we could do better if we got closer. Not like closer closer, but just, got to know the tributes better. Maybe we could get more sponsors, be more likeable." Which was usually the very last thing he wanted to do in the Capitol. But he wondered more and more: were his tributes dying because they weren't properly equipped? Because they lacked fire and armor and sharp blades? Maybe.
"Maybe we could make them care more, because folks like Esme and Kirk are worth caring about."
