It was an average, boring day in the District Four market, which meant he hadn't picked up more than a few coins here and there. The biggest haul he'd found had been not in someone's pocket, but in the gutter. That hardly made for a day's wage. He was restless as the afternoon wore on, the bitter January wind hauling off the harbor. His brother had offered to replace his coat. What an insult! As though he could not gather the funds to replace itself.

Now, though, he was coming to regret that decision. He needed one good target, that was all. He slipped between the stalls, wove between winter coats and bags of goods, never lingering long in any part of the market. It wouldn't do to be dragged to the whipping post again. He spotted an overwhelmed mother, flashing the groceries and purse as she struggled to gain control of her two toddlers. It would be easy, but the weight on his conscience would be more than the weight in his pocket.

He scowled, letting that mark go. He stepped between two stalls to study the crowd when she crossed right in front of his path. He could have tripped her or reached out and grabbed her sleeve, she was so entirely oblivious to where she walked. Faberge gaped as she hurried on, wondering what could be so distracting.

As long as it wasn't a Peacekeeper, it was good news for him.

He stalked her for just a moment, to be sure of her distraction, and then lessened the gap between them. He was almost jogging to keep up as he slipped his hand between her arm and her coat, reaching for her purse strings or keys or whatever she kept that weighed it down.

Freckles sparkle in the sunlight, yet the cold weather almost covers them up with the scarf around her neck and chin, as well as the hat that covers her ears. In a quickened pace, she hastens to a spot in the market, one famous for a certain type of fish that's hard to get at this time of year. When the weather is all but warm and her breath flitters out of her mouth with an exaggerated breath, she never even notices the youth that has an eye on her.

"Don't close yet! Please, don't close on me." She scurries through the crowd until she's upon her most desired destination, only to find the stall completely empty, except for a cat, hiding beneath the wooden table, chewing on something that looks nothing remotely like a fish anymore. "Really?"

A hand goes straight up to her forehead, smacking the center with a most frustrated attempt at getting angry, but dropping her head and closing her eyes. "Timothy. I swear. If you had only cleaned up your own mess, I could have gotten here before he left. No fish. Not my fault."

Her auburn locks fall down over her shoulders and her breaths get slower in order to resume to a more natural pace.

"Zanie?" A voice calls over to her, getting her attention, making her drop her hand from her head and sticking it into her pockets to warm the freezing tips.

"Mr. Dubbins. When did he leave his stall?" She questions.

"Five minutes ago, Zain. You need to quit being late and you'll get what you need. He'll be back tomorrow, he said."

There's one thing that is going to keep Faberge from buying a new coat. One thing between him and the purse of this oblivious girl. That one thing? Attention. She'd gone for so long, hurrying through the crowd in her own little world, smacking her forehead when she thought of... something. He hoped it was really bothersome and distracting, and then someone had to go and yell at her.

Someone she knew.

That was bad. People who knew each other tended to watch their friend's backs. Faberge ducked between the nearest stalls, fuming as she tucked her hands in, right where his should have been. He waited a few breaths, measuring their conversation. It was important to know when he'd been stalking a talker and needed to skedaddle, or when to stick it out and wait for a prime target.

Oblivious, and late. He liked both of things. In a target, not a girl. Girls had cooties. He edged closer, around the mound of winter oranges. He planted his feet behind the crates, reaching with grubby fingers. Wave goodbye! he silently implored her, poised to snatch her purse in the few seconds her hand was gone. If only.

"Get out of my stall, you thief!"

His gut swooped as the broom sailed just over his head. Faberge tumbled, rolling into the street. He popped up, none the worse for wear, right in front of the freckled girl. He grinned at her - oh he still wanted that purse of hers - and offered her a tangerine. "Hungry?" He asked before bolting from the enraged vendor.

Tomorrow? Another day away before she can get the fish that she needs for the family meal. She'd been entrusted to the chore and to go home empty handed, yet again? Twice in one week.

"Momma's not going to like this." She blurts out to the man. Her body, always in motion, bounces on her heels as she tries to look around to figure out what to do. The only person with fresh fish around this place that she and her family trusts is gone and she's the one to blame. "If I give you the money, will you hold one for me until I get here tomorrow. Going home two days in a roll without it will get a lashing from my pop."

"Anything for you, Zain." He holds his hand out as the money is then transferred. A grin later, she's distracted to the sound of the Vendor behind her yelling about a theif. The smile disappears when she sees the young boy standing so close to her, orange in hand and passing it over to her. She's not a moment to comprehend the situation as the owner of the orange is set anew.

Dumbfounded, she watches the little boy run away, tilting her head in confusion and the tight squeeze of a hand on her shoulder. "Them's my oranges. You little thief. You working with him, aren't you? I oughtta get the keepers on you!"

Her expression is that of fear and utter confusion. "NO! I am NOT!" She hands the orange back over to the vendor. "But I'll catch him for ya!" And just like that, she's taking off in the direction of the boy, stopping at the end of the row of vendors. "Boy? Where'd ya go?"
