The sea was stormy today as you walked along its shores, the white foam slapping against the shore like an abusive parent, not that you knew what that was like. You could smell the rain coming, the dampness in the air making your brown hair stick to your forehead. Dylan, your weasel, rested on your shoulder, chittering at you quietly as you grinned. Today, you were planning on maybe burning something because this would be your last opportunity before the rain began and you'd rather not miss out on an opportunity.

Scanning the beach, your blue eyes land on some dried driftwood, a thought forming in your mind as your legs carried you towards the pieces, your hands lifting them up to inspect them for any signs of dampness as damp wood does not burn easily and you've got no patience to try to get it to burn today. Satisfied, you produce a lighter from your pocket and set the wood down, preparing a small circle around it so that it doesn't accidentally get out of hand (although how it would get out of hand is beyond you but your mother told you if you light a fire on the beach, make a circle around it to keep it from getting out of hand.)

You sighed, finishing the task before bringing the lighter to the piece of wood, trying to get it to light before you remembered something very important. You couldn't just light a piece of wood on fire, the surface area was too small, you'd have to make some tinder first. This was starting to feel like a lot of effort just to light a piece of wood on fire but whatever, that was the price for burning things. Once you'd gathered up some tinder from smaller bits of wood along the shore, you were finally able to get a flame going and you quickly transferred it to the piece of wood, watching in fascination as it lit in blues and greens, the sea salt in the wood reacting with the fire. You grinned, stepping back to watch as the flames engulfed the piece of wood, lighting it up as the glow scattered light upon your face.

When the fire eventually died, you kicked sand over the still hot embers and continued on your way down the beach, looking for any other signs of life and wondering just who you would run into today.

I was out on the beach this time. Normally I gazed from the end of the pier or wharf but this time I had chosen to wander the beach. The vast expanse of blue-grey water - surprisingly light for the angry clouds overhead - tumbled and crashed both way out in the distance and right on the shore. I always loved the sound of the rolling waves, the sight of the swells rising high and higher until they split to form the rough walls that would grumble and rage up the slant of sand. I stood in bare feet, my pants rolled up above the knee and my shoes and socks in hand, while the water circled around my ankles. When it tugged at me to follow I didn't move, only wishing silently that I could follow all the way to the ocean floor.

I had always wanted to see life below the surface of the water. Time and time again I had been told that I should take up snorkeling or scuba diving if that is what I wanted to do, but no one understood what I really meant. You can't go very far down with a snorkel, and even with scuba equipment you can't last very long at the depths I wanted to see. I needed a submarine. Everyone always rolled their eyes when I said it, clearly thinking that I was on drugs again. Unlike my cousins, though, I never took part in drugs in any form. People just seemed to think that my need to see and board a submarine came from a high.

There was one day where I had sworn I had seen a submarine, a time when I had spotted the sleek grey shape break the water's surface. A para-scope had risen and turned towards the land, towards me. I know I had seen it, but no one else had. I wasn't hallucinating, and yet no one believed me. They still don't, and I'm not sure they ever will. They will just have to wait for the day that I get my submarine and then they will see that I am not the crazy one. I was never high, and I don't ever want to be high. Maybe once I get my proof, in order to celebrate the fact that I was right when so many people were wrong. Wrong about me and wrong about submarines.

What catches my eye isn't a submarine, but smoke. It's coming from the direction I'm walking and floating out over the waves. Curiosity fills me but I don't dare to take my eyes off of the ocean for a moment, except to check my footing now and again. I felt like if I missed seeing the submarine then I would never see one again. It had to know I was still looking, otherwise it would give up on me. I had to find it eventually.

I grow closer and closer to where the smoke had come from, noticing that it had stopped. It seemed that it had gone out somehow, insinuating that it had been put out since it hadn't been burning for all that long. I don't turn my gaze from the shore until I hear something other than the sea and the birds. It's footsteps.

When I look at who made them I see a boy. He looks familiar but I can't put a name to him. I was never very good with faces, I was always better with diagrams and machines. Give me something to build and I will have it done in a short time, but give me a face and tell me to name the person and I will still be there the next week. No, I am not good with names. This boy's face is really familiar now that he's gotten closer and I swear I have seen him multiple times before. I didn't think he was the type to have been following me, but I had seen him in many different places. Except there was one place I saw him a lot, him and all the others with his last name. Vespoli. A relation of mine, somewhere on my mother's side.

You could have sworn you saw someone out on the water. What where they doing in the water at this time of year? You sighed, not your issue. Your feet made footprints in the wet sand as you walked, your mind wandering away from the present as you thought about other things you could be doing today. The rain would be coming in soon, probably by the time the sun set. It was common, especially in February, for storms to come through bringing buckets upon buckets of rain to four and you sometimes resented it because it meant you couldn't play with fire.

Sighing again, you swore you heard someone say something and you turned to see the person you'd seen earlier was closer than before. "Cousin?" Cousin? Was it possible that he was one of your cousins on your fathers side? A Vespoli? As far as you knew there were no cousins on your mothers side. You looked him over for a moment, wondering why on earth he was floating in the water when there was a chill in the air.

"Well hey, I don't think we've met but we might be cousins, in my family you never know who's a cousin and who's not" you half joke because it's true. Now that you know your family is bigger than you thought, you've been having a hard time figuring out who's a cousin and who's not. "And by the way, what on earth are you doing out in the water in this weather?" you call, trying to keep a cool image of yourself plastered on when the idea of finally meeting a family member actually was quite exciting.

I still had no idea which of my cousins he was, only that we were related somehow. I looked out over the water again, not avoiding his gaze but instead trying to keep an eye out for a submarine. It felt to me like there was one out there today, but I couldn't see it. That frustrated me. I startled a bit when he spoke, my head snapped towards him like someone had yanked me by the ear. "Well hey, I don't think we've met but we might be cousins, in my family you never know who's a cousin and who's not." I didn't laugh, just tilted my head to the side. Yes, the Vespoli family was large but it was only linked to me through a single connection, so I didn't know too much about the true size of the family. My parents never really talked about them, except when my father mutters something about them being hippies. My mother usually gave him a dirty look for it.

I look once more out at the water, watching the swells rise and fall into the far distance. The waves breaking on the beach invited me to come back and play in their depths but I ignored them. Unless they would tell me where the submarine was I didn't have time for them, besides my mother always told me not to leave someone when you were in the middle of a conversation. It was rude, she told me, and being rude isn't good. People already thought I was weird, but at least most thought I was nice despite that. It wouldn't do to change that opinion. "And by the way, what on earth are you doing out in the water in this weather?" As I turned back to my cousin, my head tilted once more to the side. If I was odd, so was he. What a strange question. Of course I walked in the waves, it was the only way to be close enough to the sea in order to spot the submarine. Besides, I liked the feel of the water against my skin.

I shrugged. "I like it. The water likes me too." This time I turned my whole body towards the water, and away from the boy. Still no sign of a submarine, or any other ship for that matter. I tried to suppress my disappointment with the reminder that I still had a lot of the day left. "Which one are you?" I wanted to know which of my cousins I was meeting so I could tell my mother later. Dad wouldn't care but I know she liked to hear about it. She also liked to hear about my day, and she always asked me if I had spotted my submarine yet. My father still doesn't believe me, but at least she does.

Looks like I would have nothing to report today, though. I sighed and dug my heel into the sand. I knew it was out there today, just like it usually was, but I had a special feeling about today. It was out there, somewhere, I just had to watch and I would find it. Come on out, I just want to see you.
