Sonja Arcopello. The first name that had popped into Rafe's mind. The cool air of the morning hitting his face. A walk towards the hospital that had held the torn girl. It had already been another entire games since the loss of the broken girl that held Rafe together. The pieces that were held in place vanishing before his eyes. A broken man to the core. Rafe never had realized how much Sonja had truly held of him, including a bit of his love that was now shattered by Potato's blade. The vile thing that had torn Sonja to shreds. Rafe remembered the day like no other.
The hospital was quiet with hope that one of their own would make it back. The sound of a pen could be heard in the moment. The fight had been going on already and everyone waited in anticipation, but the look in Sonja's eyes was what tore at Rafe's insides, like he could feel Potato's blade piercing him. The way that she continued to fight was the only thing giving Rafe the tiniest glint of hope, but that hope wouldn't last. The last blow was the worst one to watch. The blade cutting through the skin that already was battered and cut open. The wound bleeding out on it's own. The words being said were what caught Rafe's eyes. The words pouring out of Potato's mouth were what caused more of a scowl than anything. Rafe had believed that he was playing the innocent act. Rafe kept a emotionless face as everything unfolded. Potato had burned Sonja's body in flames. The ash forming on the ground.
The ashes of Sonja Arcopello. Rafe had wanted the ashes for himself, but the only thing that the capitol had sent back was her token. The only thing left of her. Her hospital bracelet. Patient's items are supposed to be turned in. They are supposed to be put in a file somewhere that no one would see. Rafe was breaking the rules already. He was withholding an item from a patient's file. It was all he had left of Sonja. Sonja Arcopello was gone and Rafe knew that, but something inside of him wanted to believe that she was still alive. Alive in the capitol talking about the voices in her head.
The hospital was quiet like it always was. District six had more of a chance this year than the last few, but Rafe didn't care. Whoever would be the victor of this games would have to deal with many things that Rafe had viewed from behind a screen. The memories of the games that the victor had seen. It was better this way for Sonja. If she made it back, she would have been worse than before. A lost soul in the haze of everything evil. He'd have to hold her and take care of her to keep the monsters calm. To keep the monsters from taking over. Sonja would have listened to what the monsters told her to do. Sonja was already weak, but at the same time strong. Rafe was weak. He's always been weaker than everyone else. It was in his blood to be weak.
Rafe couldn't handle it. Patients were complaining about their rooms. "It's too hot." "It's too cold." "I feel dirty" "Can you give me my water please?" Rafe was being driven mad. The patients weren't like Sonja. they weren't patient with him. They needed it right away and it was driving Rafe mad. There was this one male who kept asking for something better than the hospital food. Rafe had the food in his hand. The man smacked it back and made it fall over Rafe. Rafe was fuming. His voice rose, "You fucking moron! Get your own damn food! I don't need to deal with this shit anymore!" Rafe was making a beeline for the exit of the hospital. That was until another nurse found out and asked someone to stop Rafe. There was a quick movement and Rafe slammed his fist into a rather larger nurse. And then he was taken away. He was struggling too much. A nurse gave him a sedative to relax his body. Rafe was relaxed finally.
Rafe was taken to the big man. The boss of the hospital. The man in charge. His voice was calm and collected. "Rafael? You know why I called you here dear boy?" Rafe sighed and had an idea why he was there. His mind was remembering everything that had happened in the hour or so. The boss man looked at Rafe again and spoke, "Rafe. We did some tests. You were a little loopy from the medicine, but you can't work here." His eyes were now wide. What had happened? He was punching a nurse one second and now he was in the boss man's office with a nurse next to him. That's when he remembered. The tests about how he was feeling and what was going through his mind. He was screwed. Screwed to the bottom of the earth. The boss man spoke again, "Rafe, you can't work here anymore. Not in the condition you're in. You were diagnosed with depression. You will be meeting here at least twice a week. You will not be working as a nurse for the time being."
Rafe's world came crumbling down. Rafe had depression. He knew that he did, but wanted to keep it secret. It was a secret that needed to be kept so they don't die. Rafe worked for him and his sister. He worked for them to live. That wouldn't be the case anymore. Rafe tried arguing, "B-But sir. I need that money. I live paycheck to paycheck sir." The boss frowned. He spoke, "There is nothing we can do about that. We know your sister has free time, we are willing to let her take over for the time being. You must relax and stay here for the first few weeks. There's nothing we can do Rafael." Rafe felt his heart clench. His sister would be taking over for him. Oasis was going to be a nurse.
Rafe walked out of the room with a frown on his face. He felt like crying. He was a patient like Sonja. He would rot in the hospital until it was his time to die. He knew how these things worked. He worked in the building after all. Sonja would haunt his mind the entire time he was in the hospital. He'd be in the same wing that Sonja was in. A nurse was leading the way to his room. The same room that Sonja laid in. The bed was similar but everything about it looked the same. Rafe felt like crying. "It's okay Rafe." Rafe looked up and the voice sounded like Sonja, but in truth it was Oasis. Oasis was there to find out about him. "I'm sorry I haven't been such a good sister." Rafe felt tears forming and the hospital gown was on. He laid in the bed. Oasis sitting down next to him humming a song. Rafe lulled to sleep. It's the price we pay for losing the ones we love.
