The forest did offer some protection from the falling snow, light enough to never be noticeable, cold enough that it stung all the same when it slammed into your face. Mara and I had slept under a willow tree, it's many limbs forking out and actually offering us some sort of comfort. However, we couldn't just stay under the protection of that tree for the remainder of the games. This was still a competition. We still had to remain in the good taste of the Capitol or, like yesterday, we would have to fight for our lives in order to remain alive. It was early morning. The sun hadn't even truly broken the horizon, but I was still wide awake. Margaret was pushed into my side, her head gently resting on my chest as she slept. I wanted so badly to join her but, how could I? How could I allow both of us to drift off to another world -- one that was safe and one that was warm -- when our bodies were to remain here defenseless until our return? Still, between the easy, even breaths Margaret took, the warmth her body burned into mine, and the sounds of creatures awakening in the tree tops I had almost been lulled away. I could feel my eyes becoming heavy, my head nodding off on occasion. I would shake myself awake and then moments later return to the same habit. Eventually I would have given up. Eventually my head would have rested atop Mara's and for a short while I would forget the horrors of the arena. But then I saw the sun catch fire. Only it wasn't the sun. It was a small rabbit. It stood only twenty feet away from us, bouncing around with two of its friends until snow from a limb smashed over its head. Within seconds the entire thing was engulfed in flames and after only a few seconds more, was just a steaming pile of flesh. Burny Rabbits. I may not have known the creatures from the day before, but these I was highly aware of. They were friendly creatures once, one of the sick Capitol ideas as pets that, if they so desired, could also become a fresh cooked meal all on it's own. It serves them right, all the burns they received. Creating a creature simply to be a child's plaything until one didn't feel like driving to the market was sad in many senses. But I knew if they were here they were different. I knew the Capitol wouldn't allow them here without some kind of aggenda, so as quickly as I watched their friend blaze to live, I was shaking Margaret awake. "Mar -- we have company!" It took her only a mere second to jump to life, her hand instinctively yanking up her weapon. "Burny Rabbits. Watch out, they can catch themselves on fire." We stood up slowly, and before they could attack us, we attacked them. //attacks BURNY RABBIT #1 LMc7jn0vaxe 11178 -- Severed Left Ear -- 8.0 damage |
