"jump into the heat
caught up in a dream"It's hardest during the day.
My siblings and I went from only having to deal with our insufferable cousins during holidays and special occasions to living with them over night. In a single instant, we were forced to adopt all of their drama and their constant misbehavior. We were never like that. I was always a person that thrived in getting attention for all the right reasons, Elvena could strike down an entire village with a single-handed sword and still kept her dignity, and Trylle's heart was too big to ever be able to withstand disappointment or disapproval.
I missed my parents, and part of me hated them for leaving us. Sure, they had no control over the matter. People with power were often targeted, and it was no secret that the Fray family was one of the most powerful in District One. It was Trylle who had found them, fast asleep in their beds, drowned in their own blood before they could even open their eyes and attempt to fight.
It didn't seem fair, and moving in with our cousins was just an addition to our punishment, and now there we were: constantly fighting one another. It was the three of us against all of them. And sometimes I couldn't take it. Sometimes I couldn't handle the looks and the comments and the judgments, though i would never admit it. Sometimes I simply needed a break, and that day I needed one really, really badly.
I had barely escaped the home without letting the tears spill. What was becoming of me? Why had I become so weak? I had always been a leader in my own right and I couldn't even manage a few of Kellan's bitter words without fleeing the scene. I was not Syrena Fray; it seemed she had died the same morning Trylle ran into my room with tears burning his flesh.
It seemed the real version of myself was buried with my parents, and that was the most tragic thing I could think of.
When I noticed the girl gawking in my direction I couldn't stop myself from whirling around and stepping toward her. "What?! Have you never seen a person cry before?!"
