KARIDEE WINGBRECK
There was an existential amount of greed in the air, the kind that tightened at your throat and suffocated any sign of breath. Bitter was the scent, and bitter was the nature-- I could sense it, feel the atmosphere peak in temperature as Cohrum Wingbreck opened his home, revealing the root to such malice. Olivia-- prim with her perfection --eyed my father as he stretched his business-orientated smile, gesturing to the western sector of his grand headquarters. They disappeared, two chattering shadows against the intertwined gold of the main wall. I didn't bother following, though it wouldn't be prohibited.
"Perhaps you'll enjoy seeing the good our nation does." He'd often say, followed by a comforting rub on the shoulder-- something rare and envied, for father wasn't a man of much affection.
The overall thought of what 'good' the Capitol did, was shiver-worthy-- a decent ripple of cold shooting through the spine. Was Panem capable of righteousness? The royal population seemed to think so, blue-skinned and fur-covered maybe, though being born with gullible genes was expected for any wealthy child-- all for one, with me being the exception. On the odd occasion, I wondered if my brain managed to glitch, breaking through the trance Panem seemed to be under.
The Capitol is good. The Capitol is giving. The Capitol is--
--a lie, pretty and perfect, with it's sweet smelling deceit and killer (literally) deception.
The sheer thought caused my innards to boil unhealthily, blood congealing and bone shattering. It was quickly masked by a natural smile-- effortless with it's wicked effect --as a frail figure made an appearance.
An avox-- the true definition of misfortune --proffered a piece of parchment paper, it's stiff whiteness familiar between my fingertips. I nodded with appreciation, and then I was alone. Flipping the seal, words whispered to me in sweet harmony.
The anonymous writer that had been my savior throughout the yearly duration, had come to my rescue yet again. You see, most with wealth as such as this wouldn't be fazed as to what lurked beyond the borderline-- separating us from them. Them being a population of many, equally separated into twelve district's (may the thirteenth rest in peace.)
I did what I could with the power I had-- whilst trying to remain secretive. Though it wasn't until this anonymous writer had begun leaving small clues, a puzzle of sorts-- that I really managed to help, saving those who needed it.
So now, as I stood in the hollow hallway of the grand Wingbreck estate, I came to the conclusion that my service was needed yet again. Needn't needing a moment of hesitation, I darted down the mahogany staircase, rushing without thought into the wide-spaced closet that I proposed was empty--
Though I was mistaken, and he was there. A face too familiar to forget.
