My lungs are on fire...
they are burning
burning...
burn....
Breathe....
Breathing is, near enough impossible. There is a moment where my lungs are ablaze, the lack of oxygen seems to fuel a fire that I cannot extinguish in this darkness that consumes my entirety. There is a moment where I believe I am dead, waiting for him to take my soul but then I breath. I splutter, coughing up the salt water that had filled my lungs like an ocean of their own as I slowly regain sense of being.
Being what?
Alive?
Dead?
Both?
Both of my eyes take a moment, I open them- or at least I think I do- but darkness stills shrouds me for a couple of seconds before the world fades in. First it is a flash, brightness and then darkness before the world fades in again. The sky is grey, the ground is beneath my feet, I am on earth or at least I am somewhere.
Heaven?
Hell?
Hell knows where I am. My nails dig into the sand, my hands balling into fists as I try to force myself up onto my feet, but I can't. My legs, my whole body feels like lead; it's weighing me down and I just don't have the energy to move. I try again but movement doesn't really happen, I just lie in the sand like a dead fish as I feel the tide wrap around my ankles for a second before flowing away.
Away
Awhere
Where...
Where am I? The question keeps playing around my head, again and again. When I turn my head, I see a ragged coast line with dark glistening rocks that occasionally find themselves a wash with spray as a wave crashes into it, falling over itself. The other way is the same, more rocks and dark damp sand but instead here an old tree lies broken and mangled on the shoreline. draped in seaweed as if it were hair. I try to look forward but all I see are dunes rising up ahead of me as if they were mountains.
The dunes...
They seem familiar...
but not...
where have I seen them before??
Before I can do anything else, a wave crashes over me, threatening to drag me back out to sea. My nails dig deeper into the sand as I slowly- somehow- manage to drag myself further up the beach. I don't know how much time has passed since I woke an now, but the sky has slowly turned a muted orange and by the time I have dragged myself to the dunes, crawling as I get some strength back, the sky is black.
Black..
Darkness..
Fear
Fearing that the sea will take me away, I pull myself as far as I can up the beach towards the dunes; I don't quite make it. I find myself crumpling at the foot of one them, breathing heavy, labored breaths before...
Sleep.
Waking up
My lungs are on fire...
they are burning
