Evander Birch
From the day we arrive on the planet and blinking, step into the sunScreams rip through the walls scratching through my ears. It's such a horrible sound, but one filled with pride, joy, happiness. So much time has gone by since her stomach expanded with the pressure little human living inside of her. My human. A baby carrying our DNA. A baby we created together in the midst of a moment. It brought for our love. A love I never experienced for someone in such a long time. A love that I wish lasted forever, yet at sixteen and seventeen years old, it's hard to tell. Beads of sweat glisten on her forward reflecting the light off her pale face. Her beautiful locks of hair plaster ungracefully against her face. Her sweat and tears break my heart.
It seems like so long has gone by since I first laid lustful eyes on her. In that moment it clicked deep inside my head. She was mine. A girl brought forth by perfect parents. A girl that nobody else wanted. That nobody cared for, yet right now, nothing matters. Pain inches its way through my body. Her screams crawl across my skin like ants looking for a place to feed. My hand rests gently in her's. All words catch in the back of my throat leaving my mouth hanging wide open. Part of me wishes they were here. Ares. Hannah. Beatrice. Cassius. All of them witnessing this moment in my life. I know they're watching from somewhere above. I know they're staring down waiting for the first peek of the precious face as it's shown to the entire world. A moment I long for. A moment I don't want to miss.
Hushed voices echo through my mind as sleep threatens to take over my body. ("How long has it been?" "Only about twenty hours I believe." "Will it ever get here?" "Yeah give it time.") Annoyance sweeps through my veins consuming my soul like a wildfire. Lexi lays on the bed grasping onto her life as she forces another life into the world, and all they're worrying about is how long it's been. Her hand grips tightly against my as someone in the background encourages her to continue. Encourages her to push, to keep going. Not to give up because the look in her eyes is one pleading with me. She's tired. She wants to stop. She wants this all to end, yet nothing will make it stop. "One more time. Just one more time.") Her eyes fix on mine and her breathing picks up. Her lungs expanding faster than any lungs should ever expand. It's so loud, and so hectic, but for a moment it stops.
It's silent.
And then a sudden cry burst into the air. Not a cry of Lexi, but a cry of a new life. It all stands still. Nothing moves as I run a hand gently through Lexi's hair. Her eyes weak. Her body stained by a pain that I can't imagine. Tears leak from the corner of her eyes as she grows quieter and quieter. "Congratulations! It's a girl!" The words barely register in my mind as Lexi lays on the bed shaking, no, twitching uncontrollably. My heart leaps inside my chest. It pounds against the walls. It echoes through my mind blocking out the sound of my newborn daughter crying into the air. Screaming breaks through as people gather around forcing me out of the way. Arms wrap around my waist drawing me backwards, yet I fight with every ounce of strength I have. Something's wrong with her. "You don't want to be here right now." It's quiet. It's so quiet as he draws me from the room little by little. Tears pour from my eyes as man places my daughter into my arms.
Tiny blue eyes fix on mine. She's precious. She's a being brought into the world created by the Capitol. A hell waiting for her to grow up in, but it's my duty to protect her from whatever comes her way. A father shouldn't ever leave a child to fend on their own because they're innocent to the ways of the world. She knows no right or wrong. The corners of my lips twist into a smile as her tiny eyes close. My hand rests on her chest feeling the rise and fall. She's so tiny. So small, yet she's so strong at the same time. "Hello precious." My arms bounce in a tiny motion trying with all I have to force the little girl to sleep. Instinct floods my mind, and I know right away that this child is the love of my life. This child caused so much agony only to wrap her tiny fingers around my heart and squeeze tightly.
The door behind me clicks open, and the world fades away. It's only me and the man standing in front of me. His eyes downcast. His face written with sorrow etched into every single wrinkle. My heart sinks deep into my stomach. Tears spew from my eyes as I stare deep into his. No. No. No. This can't be happening. "I'm sorry, Mr. Birch, but Lexi is no longer with us." All time stops moving. Chills crawl through my skin eating away at my spine. A hand reaches inside grabs a hold of my spinal cord and rips it into pieces. My legs crumble beneath the weight of my fragile body. Hands snatch the tiny girl from my arms as I collapse onto the ground. Violent sobs rip through my lips. A girl I spent many years with. A girl who brought my, our, daughter into the world. A girl who's hand I held during the labor. A girl who brought joy into my life. The only sound is my heart echoing in my head. It's loud -"Matthias, what is your daughter's name?" - I stop. My eyes turn towards him as two words quietly fill the air.
"Lexi Birch."
