French Toast Saves Everything
"No, Samantha. I haven't found a man suitable for my likings." Every single day, at least one of these little Rascals are curious over my romance life. For a pack of eight year olds, they can get awfully nosey. We're in the middle of a math lesson, going over how fractions weave into our daily routines, and one raises their tiny arm to wonder over my relationship status. What gets me the most, is their assumptions on my fondness for the male variety. Stereotypes are far too prevalent within this district. Guess I can be thankful that at least this age isn't baffled over the gender I contain.
Moments later the school bell rings, and has all the kids dashing from the room. I might of been nominated the most entertaining teacher, but that doesn't erase a child's desire to be anywhere but here. After another long Monday such as today, I can't deny I'm just as grateful for the day to be over. Of course there's a load of assignments to grade before I can escape myself. Automatically I get comfortable at my desk while I heavy sigh is released from my lungs. Work just never seems to end.
The ring of the phone startles me to no end, and jolts me from the paper that's making my eyes grow heavy. Hardly ever hear a peep from that thing. "Ms. La'Vie's classroom." I answer after a small fiddle with the technology. Clearly I was born within the wrong District, because I don't mix well with machinery.
"Good afternoon, Ms. La'Vie. Sorry to bother you, but Ms. Cintruli is requesting that you visit with her. Apparently there's some concern over Quincy." Instantly my heart drops from the news she delivers. That young one of mine has been acting a bit different lately, but I can't imagine him ever doing anything bad. He's too sweet of a kid. Yet I have a feeling this isn't an innocent discussion over how he's doing. It's too sudden.
I want to jump from my seat at this very second...though I should probably know where I'm going first. "I'll head over right now. What room?" And with that bit I'm off to fulfill my first & biggest job in life, and that's as a parent. I journey past the primary school buildings, and to where the older kids reside. A few are still scattered among the field used for sports, though I don't spot any of my own. Probably best not to embarrass any of them with my presence. And soon enough I'm approaching on the room number I was given. Please have a friendly face awaiting me on the other side of that door.
Can't help the fact that my breath is taken away by the beautiful woman before me in this room. "Mrs. Cintruli..." I find myself speechless from her features alone, the way she so gracefully sits at her desk as if she's a delicate angel. She must be married to a man of similar attraction. "I'm Ms. La'Vie, Quincy's foster mom." Least I manage at introducing myself. "It's great to meet you...thanks for teaching him and all. Is everything alright?" Probably best to quit with the small talk and cut to why she's called me here. I take a seat at one of the desks, as though I were the one in trouble.
