I am looking for one person to work with me doing software development for the site.
Primary responsibilities:
- help developing the Ripred suite, including Warehouse and Hero
As Junior Developer, you would:
- report directly to me
- work on smaller tech stories and defects (at first) on Warehouse and Hero while you learn the environment, software, and development process
- learn programming, specifically the new Ripred stack (Ruby on Rails backend, minimal Javascript) plus general programming tools (Git and Github for version control, Heroku for hosting and deployment, some shell commands) and a loose version of Agile development methodologies
As someone interested in this position, you should be:
- eager to learn, first and foremost
- willing to admit mistakes and accept criticism
- willing to ask me questions and unafraid of approaching me or talking to me
- self-directed
- available a few nights a week to discuss what we've been working on and what problems we've been having
- available to actually do the work
THIS IS NOT AN EASY POSITION.
As such, the hiring process will be much, much different than the any regular staff search. I need to know that you and I can work well together, and that you are capable of all that will be required of you, especially the workload. That said, if you feel like you're up for the challenge, feel free to apply (see bottom of this post) - but only if you're serious! The interview process will be much longer than usual, especially for me.
Here's what the interview process will look like:
- you pick a handful of two-hour blocks from the list at the bottom of the thread
- I'll slot you for one of them and let you know via slack which I pick
- we'll spend that time chatting for a bit via slack. It probably won't be the full two hours
- during our chat, we'll discuss: the job itself and what you hope to get out of it (I can answer any questions you might have), any prior experience you've got that you think might be relevant, and we'll work through a few logic puzzles and some simple programming questions together
