For the forth time that day, Leo sipped from a new cup filled with scalding liquid life. His fingers wrapped delicately around the paper, an incredible warmth seeping through. There was a slight bob to his entire figure as he stood in the empty room, gazing upon some calculations tossed upon the board before him. A marker sat between his messy hair and right ear, the smell of its ink swarming the young man's senses with the aroma of the coffee. There was a miscalculation at some point, he had just yet to come across it. The numbers that sat at the bottom of the board were far off from where they realistically should be. Planck's constant was definitely to the negative thirty-four, right?
There was always, every year since he was old enough to attend, a school organized tech fair for the senior-most students. Almost like an easy way to gauge who the brightest minds and better contributors to the future of technology would be. Most of the time it would fall upon the parents to inspire their youthful children, taking far too much of a part than they were supposed to. The winners would typically have a fast track to a better research building or factory than everyone else, their genius clearly encompassed by a school project. To make it even more stressful, every final year student was paired with a junior student, hoping to allow their knowledge and wisdom to pass on as if osmosis worked with information. Most of the time, the partnerships were terrible and lead to absolute chaos. That was the case last year, where his idea of a simple spectroscopic magnifying tool turned into an unnecessarily high tech head lamp. After all, who doesn't love being able to make the light flicker through the colour spectrum?
This year was a need-to-succeed situation, however. Leo knew it. He had practically calculated the odds already, knowing full well that his best bet would be to bring about attention before he already started working. Once he got in a position, he would excel due to his attitude towards work. It was getting exactly what he wanted to do that was the issue. Sometimes you didn't get what you want, and Leo was fully aware he wouldn't be capable of arguing his way out of working the wiring of most of the stuff they built. His forte was the theory behind it, as well as light. Everybody loved light, right?
His partner was supposed to meet him in the study room, going through their ideas for the final build. Please, I can't put up with an idiot. The quieter, the better. That would mean less gabbing and more working, leaving them a fairly efficient yet calm timeline to finish all of the logistics before setting on assembly. If they were anything like last year's partner - well, Leo didn't want to think of that situation. He'd avoid the negativity that always came to mind when putting faith in his peers. For now, he'd be the biggest bundle of optimism that had ever existed. There is nothing in this world that I'd rather do than spend my days teaching a little kid how to function in this District. Move to District Ten and work the farms.
The colours of the world around him returned to his eyes as he seemingly returned to reality, and he shook the stiffness from his arms. They should be here soon, I think. He then realized the biggest issue...
For the fifth time that day, Leo sipped from a new cup filled with scalding liquid life.
