So, as you all know, there aren't a lot of old characters in Panem - or, at least, not in our version of it. Now, this has a lot to do with the fact that we tend to create characters that are reaping-aged in order to participate in the Games, but I say no! Life does not immediately end when people age past the formative years, and it's important that we have a variety of characters on the site.
To hell with the white able-bodied skinny 17-year-olds. This is a call to action.
The emphasis of this plot - if you can really call it a plot - is to create characters who are moving up in years. That could really mean almost anything - if your characters are in their late 50s, 60s, or even older - it doesn't quite matter. Despite the fact that Panem can sometimes be quite formidable, and it's not as likely that there are many elderly characters in a starving District Twelve vs. a flourishing District One, I encourage and challenge you to create at least one older character in the District or location of your choice. It doesn't matter where, and it doesn't matter what they're like. Your older characters are going to have just as much personality as your youngin's, and all levels of creativity are encouraged.
Here are various ideas, if you're stuck:
- Former Careers in the upper districts who can still wield a sword and murder you in your sleep if you're not careful.
- Old Peacekeepers!! Teaching the younger inexperienced people how to do shit correctly.
- Elderly Capitolites who remember the Good Old Days about the Games and reminisce about tributes long-gone.
- Old wanderers who live in the wild with big families in rickety old cabins who don't even know who the fuck you're talking about when you say the name 'Caesar Flickerman.'
- DISTRICT SEVEN BEARDY LUMBERJACKS
- The stereotypical odd fisherman guy who tells all the cool stories but people can't tell if they're true or not because these things conveniently happened decades ago.
- Aging mad scientists with gray hair and LIFe-CHANGING THEORIES
- People who aren't exactly healthy, but make the most of the life they have and face the same trials as other people in Panem
- CUTE OLD STRAIGHT/GAY/LESBIAN/BI/ETC COUPLES. IDC WHAT THE ORIENTATION, OLD COUPLES HAVE GOT EVERYTHING FIGURED OUT HOPEFULLY
- even if they don't have it figured out, you could have like a tumultuous love triangle. Idc.
- serial killer best friends who have never been caught ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Retirees who have lots of children and lots of love and lots of badass stories
- NON-BINARY CHARACTERS
- In general: old characters of color
- Stereotypically, old ladies (and men!!) who like to sew and are some of the most skilled workers in District Eight
- District Ten cowboys!! with mustaches!! and literally no fear!!
But seriously - you could do anything with these characters! Granted, I would suggest trying to include some details in their applications that deal with their experiences while aging, because that's a fundamental part of things. If you'd like to join this plot, I wish you the best of luck with writing your apps - and I hope to read them soon!
Let me know in this thread if you're planning on creating a character (or several!) with your ideas. I'd love to hear them + keep this thread active so it doesn't get buried.
If you post a link to your app in this thread when you're finished, I'll have a directory of older characters listed here so you can thread with each other <3
