"Grandpa, tell me a story."
In the dark of the night, a young man breaks free, sprinting from the confines of his district while rain pours about him. A female accompanies him, the searchlights watching, glaring for any sign of movement. They linger upon the chainmail fence, and he forces the woman through, barreling after her with whoops of jubilation.
Together, they escape, together they are free. Like the birds in spring, they migrate to safe places between the districts, and live their lives of struggle. She has one child- two, three. Three baby girls within five years who grow, learn, and play together.
Atropos is the first.
She longs for the taste of the city, from whence her father spins tales of granduer, of streets paved with beautiful rock, smoother than the mirror of water outside her home. He tells her of the games, of the death march that hangs over Panem like a cloud of smog, but she will never have babies. The games mean nothing to someone such as her.
Lachesis is told of open air skies, where the citizens do not run in fear from the smallest hovercraft. Instead of stars, glowing marquees and city lights impregnate the sky, and always, there is a friend to be had instead of the lonely home she's come to know.
Clotho was told of the wide, open sea, the horizon blending with the sky, and sunsets rich with glory. Food was everywhere in the waters, if you only knew how to look.
Unfortunately, his tales were too well spun, and the three daughters agreed to leave to the districts, on the condition they were free to return if they so desired.
None of them did.
Their children, however, are a different story.
