inhale pollution; the dirt, the rocks and oxygen.
exhale pollution; the dust, the sand and carbon dioxide.
in the bare wasteland that i inhabit, you would not think
there'd be much life under the rocks and stones.
and the truth is, under the roof of my home, with the exception
of my safe haven, it is as lifeless and bleak as you'd expect.
my parental figures are shadows, people with faces that blur
together and though they provide for my needs, their voices
do not exist in my mind. despite my efforts to show them
my endless notes and sketches of everything and anything,
they fail to care nor understand and have pushed me away
to study the rocks and the dirt and the sand.
she's not at home as she should be. not with her parents,
who are very much alive, but to her may as well be dead.
she's collecting fireflies at a nest she discovered three weeks ago.
it's dark but there are no boundaries to her endeavours
and torchlights are useful devices to write in the dark.
perhaps i'd forgive them if i could understand myself.
it's just dirt - unmoving, lifeless and irritatingly boring.
i've observed rocks before and do you know what they do?
just what all rocks do. nothing. absolutely nothing.
maybe it is hypocritical for me to question their preferences,
but perhaps i would not be so bitter if they gave me their time of day.
the entire nest is an anomaly to the environment she is now used to.
it is located inside an isolated cave a kilometre away from the research
centre that she suspected must have experimented with these
fireflies not too long ago. she found the nest by accident, while
exploring the outskirts of the research centre itself. normally such
wandering would have been forbidden, but she had bribed a few
peacekeepers to turn a blind eye in exchange for information
and data she had collected on people she knew were of importance to them.
there's no point in dwelling in such sorrows any longer.
not when there are more interesting and exciting things to discover
and to learn about. why bother trying to observe and analyse the actions
of those who are not only hurtful, but who are also undeniably,
repetitive and boring. who cares about geologists anyway.
there's only one pattern to them, dull, dull, dull and dull.
unlike school and going on walks. those things are
interesting. like fireflies, fireflies are interesting too.
yesterday, i saw a lizard the size of a snake. or was it
an iguana, i can't really tell the difference anymore.
it doesn't matter, one more for my collection.
her fingers let loose of her sketchbook and bitterness
proceeding, to carefully unscrew a labelled jar.
she had prepared for this weeks in advance, filling the jar partially
with her own concoction of mud and sand and poking breathing holes
on the cap of the jar to allow them to live. her physical collections
were always temporary, but the real permanence laid in her sketchbook
where she kept an uncountable amount of sketches and research
on her anythings and everythings.
my knack for understanding is wasted upon my parents.
in fact, my ability to read behaviours and patterns through
physical actions or objects is something of a gift. it's becoming easier
and easier to read everybody. having a photographic memory helps too.
that boy in my class who thinks nobody knows, but i know
he definitely has an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
he's always tapping, moving, constantly on the go - even the syllables
don't stop drooling from his mouth. that girl in my class, she thinks nobody knows,
but i know she definitely has problems at home. the way she glares at her
siblings in the hallway, or the way her eye twitches
slightly at the mention of her parents or anyone's parents.
i know these things. so who cares about geologists anyways?
her hair, a long and dark ebony is getting in
the way of catching fireflies. it's been twenty minutes and
though she knows her parents won't mind her missing,
the peacekeepers won't appreciate her wandering out too late.
she clicks her tongue, irritated by her limited time and loops her hair into a bun.
desperately, her syrupy hazelnut eyes scour for the nest of fireflies
she swears she saw the other day. and she can't doubt her senses,
not her eyes that can cut through glass or those ears that could hear a pin drop.
she can't be wrong, jade is never wrong.
she doesn't want to wade further into the man-made marshes inside the cave,
but she does. she waddles deeper till the mud is at her waist,
praying at every step that the rocks under her feet are stable.
she's mildly coordinated on her best days, but jade
is definitely not known for her physical superiorities.
a few more paces and she stops. there is no point in venturing further.
she couldn't have seen them if they were any further
and she doubted they'd have travelled so far from their original
nest. she tastes disappointment in her mouth,
a raw and distinct flavour that stings her tongue and
dries her lips. it burns almost and she can feel it course through her body.
the bittersweet taste of failure is completely unwelcome and foreign.
she's not familiar with this feeling of disappointment,
not when this dish of frustration has been served
from herself. it feels heavier, much heavier than the cold ignorance
of her parents. or the ignorance of her peers. or really,
the ignorance of her whole world. everyday, she has spent her time
watching, observing everything and anything - and it is in this moment,
she has realised that everything and anything couldn't care less
about her existence. closing the jar with her hands, she attempts to
manoeuvre her body back towards the mouth of the cave.
just as she turns, in the corner of her eye, lying in between the rocks in the wall,
secluded and isolated, is a firefly.
