Name:
Elenore Landdon
Goes by Nora
Age:
16
Gender:
Female
District/Area:
District Three
Appearance:
Nora would have rather been born with a plain face. She would rather blend in with the crowd, so to speak. It was to her utter disappointment that she grew to be so tall and pretty. What a vapid thing to be unhappy about, right? "I'm just TOO pretty!" But the way Nora sees it, looks account for so little in a person's life, having them only makes things more complicated. And Nora likes things very, very simple. She doesn't do much with her natural features, as a result. Heavy-lidded, almond-shaped blue eyes go unaccented. Cupid's bow lips go unpainted. Peachy-blonde hair goes unadorned. The most she'd ever do to her shoulder-length hair would be to brush it, if even that. Nora can most often be found with it in a ponytail; no fuss, no muss.
A smattering of light ginger freckles is all the adornment her face needs. With a strong, squared jawline on an oval face, she often looks like she's either contemplating a particularly difficult problem, or worrying over her brother, which is usually the case. Standing at 5'11, Nora is quite tall for girls her age, and as a result, stands with a slight hunch, to make herself look a bit shorter. She's got a somewhat pear-shape to her, being just slightly more bottom-heavy than top-heavy, Nora can often be seen wearing jeans and men's shirts with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, hiding her figure. As you can guess, she's not exactly one to 'flaunt what she's got'.
Both Landdon children have a plethora of scars, Nora's being primarily on her hands. Tiny nicks and cuts that never get a chance to fully heal before she's cut herself again. She also happens to have two tree-knot-like scars, one on her upper right thigh, one on her left shoulder/collarbone area. Both of these happen to be where she's found herself on the receiving end of low-voltage electric shocks. Both accidental, of course. But who HASN'T accidentally electrocuted themselves in District Three, right? Right.
Personality:
Nora is non-confrontational to the extreme. She finds herself at odds with her brother more often than not because of their distinct clash in conflict-resolution styles. Rather than fight, or shout, or even disagree in the slightest, Nora will instantly concede whatever point is being made, and try to move on with pleasant conversation. She would rather be made to look like a fool than to try and argue her point, and on many occasions, she's done just that. It annoys her brother to no end, though she wishes it wouldn't.
Besides her extreme pacifism, Nora is also pretty subdued in her passions. Rather than aspire to be some great tech inventor in her district, Nora aspires to just make a livable wage, and be able to support a family. She's not grandiose in anything in her life; her looks, her voice, her clothes or her dreams. Even her taste in food can be bland at times, but for her, that's just perfect. She would rather paint the town beige than do it up red.
But more than anything else, her devotion to her brother trumps all. She's been known to do some pretty crazy and reckless things in the name of family, most notably stand up for him against kids much bigger than both of them, even though she would never stand up for herself. Nora would never fight someone on her own accord, but for her brother, she would gladly take a punch, or even a bullet if it ever came to that. In fact, her biggest and most sour regret in life is that she was not born a boy, because as it is, she would not be able to volunteer for him in his place if he were to be reaped.
History:
The first child and only daughter of Pheobe and Ray Landdon, Elenore didn't make a peep coming into this world. She was the quietest of children, and her father used to tell her that she didn't even cry until her brother was born, and only then because she felt bad that he was crying so much.
Nora's early years were not an easy time for her. Pheobe Landdon became pregnant again shortly after Elenore's birth, and it was a troublesome pregnancy from the start. She was weak throughout, and once little Cyril Landdon was born, she only declined from there. When Nora was only 15 months, and Cyril was 5 months old, their mother passed away. Left with two infants, their father began to buckle under the grief and pressure, and not long after, the siblings were sent to live with their mother's sister across the District, and their older cousin.
It was clear very early on that neither of the Landdon children were genius-material. Not that either was dim by any definition of the word, but in a district that favors and exalts savant-like intellect, merely 'average' was far below the standards set for the poor children. It didn't help that Nora's cousin, five years her senior, was the resident protégé of the household. Her childhood was spent in the shadow of his pedestal, constantly being compared and criticized for not measuring up to such an insanely high standard. Both of the Landdon kids developed coping mechanisms for the less than stellar upbringing, though they couldn't have been more different.
Nora became the ultimate pacifist. She convinced herself early on that she enjoyed occupying a lower standard of care, as opposed to her cousin, and steeled herself not to fight it, or anything, for that matter. It helped her remain calm and collected, and helped combat her brother's caustic attitude of it all. And that's how she's remained, after all these years. Still living with her Aunt, Uncle and cousin, she and her brother eek out a living, as the average citizens of an above-average demi-society.
