The clouds had finally returned over the seam as the rays of morning were devoured by a spur of sprinkling water. A smile inched across Newt's face at the falling droplets of silver that left long plumes of steam from the over heated streets. Rain had always made Newt happier since it was always a sort of cleansing. A way in which all the horrible things that had happened could be vanquished in a matter of mere minutes. Also he had to admit he enjoyed the free drinking water and free bathing water as well. For Ripred's sake Newt and his family would take anything and everything free, even if it was from the sky of all places.
The thought of Newt's family made him sigh deeply as he rounded another sullen corner. He knew his mother was doing badly but she acted like it was nothing to all her children besides him. He was the only one who truly knew just how fast his mother was deteriorating. If only she could step out into the rain and have her illness washed away like the feeling of depression he always had looming over him. However just like everything in Panem it wasn't possible. So many things weren't possible these days. In fact Newt wasn't even sure if he believed miracles were real.
One thing though that kept him trudging on his already adult life was the fact that he knew his siblings got to enjoy their youth. Sure they weren't wealthy but they got to enjoy everything he couldn't. Even now he could see them off in the distance running through the rain and diving in puddles as their laughter rang out over the shacks of the Seam. It was a luxury he never got to have, but one he was happy they got to live through as if there weren't any problems in the world. Maybe for them there wouldn't be for awhile, at least not while he could help it.
In fact he was making his way to one of his friend's house who happened to be a healer. Newt was hoping his friend would have something to help with his mother's cough but he was met with some bad news as he shoved through the door. "I'm sorry Newt, I don't have what you are looking for here and even if I did I don't think you could afford it."
The words stung but Newt knew he was right. The price was probably far beyond the depths of his pockets and his friend needed to provide for his family as well. So with a sorrowful nod Newt waved farewell and pushed his way back into the moist air. His breath danced like the smoke of the 66th Finale in the chilling air as his feet pulled him over to a nearby bench.
Just like Newt's spirit the old willow tree above the bench was twisted and gnarled in every which way. Thankfully though the christening droplets from above covered the falling of his own tears as fear gripped his body. He already had lost his father and he wasn't ready to lose the only true person who has always loved him. He wasn't ready to legally take on all his siblings alone. He was always willing to help but finally everything just seemed like a bit too much. Finally Newt let his face fall into his hands as he muttered uselessly between his silent sobs, "What am I going to do?"
Why is the winter even colder here?
