My hair radiates like the sun, scarlet locks flickering through the forests of district twelve. My mother and father lost tot he caves years ago. A mining accident had landed them dozens of feet below the ground, buried in their forever lasting grave. I guess being born into coal, meant dying in coal. I couldn't remember their faces, though I was told I had my fathers square jaw, my mothers sapphire eyes, and the pastel white skin of them both. I had been living with an aunt of mine since the age of three. Auntie Luthy always said that they should have been smarter, that it was their own damn fault.

I couldn't argue, I didn't know the people. I would never disagree with Auntie Luthy, what she said went, and if you oppose her, then you are simply disrespecting her grace. I had a frail figure, always being told I would never last in the mines. My jagged bones crushing beneath the weight of a pickax. They were probably right, I wasn't much of a sight to see, so I would try and enjoy the childhood I was given. Our house was very full, Me being the only child of my parents Auntie Luthy also had four children of her own. Gran-Gran also found her home here with us, age had become to much for her to handle.

Auntie Luthy had also lost her husband to the mines, that may be why she is so bitter about my parents. I was the eldest of the children in the home, so I was expected to bring in some kind of income. I had found that I was rather fond of the trade. Black market trading to be exact. Sure I would have to do things to make it in this world, many of which meant doing things that I wasn't proud of. But the strong did survive, even if that meant being a weasel in the process. I would steal from those I found the best off, which were few people here in District Twelve, but I did my research. After I had stolen the items of value I traded them for things like food and money at the black market. Though there was very little of this to go around, somehow we kept everyone in our household chugging.

Auntie Luthy worked in the mine of course. She made decent money, but not nearly enough to feed us all, and that is where my skills came into the picture. I could never tell her of what I am doing, or it might land me starving on the street, though I guess we are all already starving. Auntie Luthy had a set of twin boys, a very young daughter and a son nearly my age. Her twin boys were twelve, always seeming to give little to no attention to our hard work. Her daughter was about three, and always seemed to be an extended arm of Gran-Gran. Gran-Gran never much moved form her chair, so she was a rather good babysitter. Though I worried of that child would ever learn to walk, she seemed to like Gran-Gran's lap just a bit too much.

Auntie Luthy's older son was sixteen I believe, her first child. He would be finding work in the mines within the next few years, and I would start just a year before hand. He was a good kid, never really knew him well, he stayed quiet. But somehow he still never managed to contribute to the household. I had always wondered what he wasted all of his hours on. You would think that with nothing but time you could come up with something. I guess he found school rather important, unlike me, but even school shouldn't take that amount of time. Hell, maybe he was making a flying machine so we all could get the hell out of here. I swear he probably had the brain for it.

Auntie Luthy thought rather high of herself. She always seemed to believe because she had survived two mining accidents, that she was some sort of god. Like no rock could crush her. In my opinion she was just very lucky. I don't know if it is the guilt or grieving of losing her husband and sister to the mine, but she can never properly cope with what had happened. Its like she could never blame the Capitol, it was always mother or uncle's fault. As if they had a decision of the rocks collapsing.

The only think Auntie Luthy and I had in common was our face of freckles, we both seemed to have an endless dot-to-dot puzzle on our face. I liked mine very much so, I think it meant that my face was different then everybody else's. I mean you never see the same freckle twice, right? I was terrified of the mine, knowing that it was just a way of life, but so many life's had been lost to it, there could only be more to come. And with my luck of a life, I was sure I would just be clumsy enough to get myself dead.

But even more so I was afraid of the arena. None of it had a meaning, I understand that District Twelve had had its luck with victors, but how we had managed this was beyond me. None of us had any training, none of us could make sense of much more then coal. I guess most of us were quick learners, maybe that's what we had under our belt? No matter what I had never wanted to see myself enter that arena, the idea makes me sick to my core. "The blood of a child, is like the blood of an angel. For if it spills, god will cry."
