Obstacle Course

Welcome to the obstacle course! During this event, you will need to push yourself to limits to overcome 2 obstacles for this day that have been placed before you. You have trained, and you have worked hard, and now it's time to show everyone what you are capable of. At the end of the day, scores will be tallied!

In this event you will encounter:

The first obstacle: crawling under 10 longs hanging 1.5 feet in the air, you aren't allowed to touch the logs. Roll for crawling = [*roll=1500+1500] for time and [*roll=1-2] to see if you hit a log. 1 = didn't hit a log 2 = did hit a log. If you hit a log you will need to roll [*roll=1-10] to determine how many of the logs you hit. (please note, this will need to be edited in after post.) For the timing of this, if you rolled 1936, a decimal point will be added making it hundredths of seconds, so it would be 19.36 seconds. If you hit a log, 10 seconds for each log will be added to your time.

The second Obstacle: 15ft rope ladder. Roll for this [*roll=1500+6500]. For example, if you rolled 7712, a decimal point will be added making it hundredths of seconds. So it would become 77.12 seconds.

Land that Prometheus didn't know greeted him with every watchful sweep of his eyes. Hues of green reached out to every corner of his retinas as his feet carried him through the cool dew morning. Flags wavered brightly in the light breeze as cheers and the constant dins of crowds crawled into Prometheus' ears. Excitement was already coursing through his body from just being in an entirely different district and now he was about to compete in the main event. All his life Prom believed he could be so much more than a simple poor coal mover from District Twelve. Now for once he actually really thought his beliefs could go from fantasy straight to reality.

Ahead Prom could make out the shapes of mass crowds shaking with waves of excitement as well. In the center he spotted the other competitors. Nerves greeted his mind as he forced himself to relax. Today was simply only the first step, if he wanted to make a good impression he had to live up to the challenge. No, he had to excel above what anyone expected of him. Which he was lucky was quite low since he was from District Twelve after all.

As the announcer called for the athletes to get themselves in proper position he could see the first challenge laid out in front of him. Logs swung high in the air threatening to destroy any hopes of a good time. As Prom prepared himself for the start he focused on one main point. If he could crawl swiftly but safely through the logs without hitting one he could win. However he had to actually do the action instead of just imagine it. So when the starter rang he just let himself become what he needed to be. An athlete worthy of winning, a champion.

I didn't want to let anyone see me this morning. No words to accompany my ears, free of the feeling of being watched and judged. I didn't want anything at all to try and break me; to push or to shove, to say the wrong kind of joke and look confused as my emotions paint a picture of a long, deep, dark, black hole.

But there was another reason why I didn't need to make contact with another this morning: I was already looping conversations with myself over and through my mind, word upon word weaving together but the end result is far from beautiful. It's a mess, I can't keep up with myself, I can't keep up with my mind. Memories and tips and tricks to be the best I can get lost in the battle of my thoughts, poking their heads up like a lost child searching for their mother.

Admittedly, there was no real need for me to feel like this. The Highland Games seem like fun, and for once in Panem, it seems like the Capitol has devised a way for us to play a game without running the risk of dying. And a game is all this journey really is: I can learn from the experience and look back on it when I'm an old prune.

Perhaps these games will even manage to crack me and steal a smile, but that's only if they play their cards right.

The air around me is tainted with excitement, confidence and confusion as I emerge from my tent and head to the starting point of the obstacle course. I walk alone and can hear distant shouts and cheers from spectators. It makes me shiver, all eyes on my words, my actions, my mistakes.

The sea of people parted for me as I wormed my through the reach the rest of the participants. Smiling faces and grit teeth is what I'm met by and it makes the little confidence I have peel away from me like rust.

My cataclysm of impressions and ideas seemed to reach a soothing calm. No more eternal immensity, nor clouds darker than the secrets of the Capitol. It all seemed to fade as if the world was frozen by the touch of a magic finger.

Left in it's place is fear: fear of the unknown and of making mistakes in front of all these people and embarrassing myself and of being outcast and lonely — fear.

Competitors in front of me slither away into and under the obstacles until it's my turn, and I shake like the wings of a bee: rapid and endless.

Deep breaths, in and out.

And then the timer rang.

In this moment, the entire world can change, but who would notice a scrawny kid from district seven with missing fingers? It's a reminder of what had happened, and what would've been had my world not turned around. Had mother and father actually cared for me, maybe they would still be alive wishing me well, yet the man above had other plans. But this isn't about them - it's about me, Chester Meisenzahl. It's my life, and right now it is my time to shine. My time to show the world that I am not a screw up. That my entire life has become something worthwhile.

Who needs parents when they have the entire world?

It's been a long day. Everyone tossing around orders telling me what to do, yet it doesn't matter. I was chosen for this along with several others, and I'm ready for the challenge. I'm ready to show the world what I am capable of.

My mind is still as I make my way to the starting line. My eyes glaring at those around as I take in the competition. These competitors may think that I am weak. That I am strong, and not just a stupid weakling. An evil grin twists across my face. A silent chuckle escapes my lips as the bell chimes.

I run as fast as I can before dropping to my knees to crawl under the logs that's been placed before me. My knees drag against the dirt floor. I can only hope I make myself proud because nobody else in the world matters. I feel my back slide against the first log, and I know I need to get lower, but it seems impossible because each time I try, I only find myself hitting more and more longs. Gritting my teeth, I look around snarling at my opponents. They don't deserve to win. I deserve it.

Once I'm out from under the logs, I'm quickly on my feet running as fast as I can before gripping the rope ladder. My mind races as I push myself upward. My mind focuses on winning.

My carelessness on the crawling has definitely screwed me over, and I must make up for it now.

Autumn gazed at the logs dangling in front of her, wondering what exactly she was supposed to do before she saw the other participants begin to scramble under them, crawling, and she knew that this was going to be a messy event, thank Ripred she had decided on just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. The late summer sun made the air around her warm as she heard the whistle blow for her turn and she began to crawl.

I am no warrior.

I have watched the games and I have heard of the Olympics in Four, and those people are the warriors. Those people are the fighters, the winners. I am eternally a loser. I have lost Gavin. I have lost Rowan. I have lost everything in my life.

Why should this be any different?

Of course, when word of the Highland Games first began surfacing, mother was set on the Barker name being synonymous with it, and since I am the only child still young and powerless enough to still live with them, my name was scribbled down before I even knew what was going on.

I am no warrior, but I am supposed to be. Right now, I am supposed to be. So I throw myself on the ground and I crawl as quickly as possible. And I don't stop when I hear the logs falling like heavy rain around me. I pull myself along, hoping to just get out as quickly as possible. And when I finally find myself at the end, I waste no time clambering to my feet and sprinting to the gigantic rope ladder that awaits me. Tiptoe across the tightrope, I think, one wrong step and everything comes crashing down.

But I have nothing left to drop.

I climb and it is worlds harder to execute than to spectate. The slack in the ropes gives too much space and makes it next to impossible to actually climb. But I feel myself soaring. I feel myself moving.

When the buzzer sounds at last, I know I am finished. At least for now. These games are not finished yet, and each day will hold new events and present plenty of opportunities for me to make a mockery of myself and heed my mother's wrath if I should fail.

But I am through for now.

And that is all that matters.

Tip-toeing across a wooden platform, my feet trace the sanded down board. It'd been a long ride from District Eight, aching bones chilled up as though the pulsating nerves had been frozen and set off all at once. A thawing sensation once my foot hit the wooded ground, and the Highland games had officially started with out hesitation as the trains pulled to a stop. I'd come here alone, for my mother and father didn't feel the need to protect their little girl, for I am a lot stronger than I may seem. A natural born career with a retired peacekeeper father, one whose training had made me into the girl I am today.

Arrogance was made for careers, and even though I hadn't been born into the class I've been ranked, left alone the meaningless life forms who reside in Eight. I'd been raised among them, and had it been side by side, then perhaps I could show them a thing or two. I was practically crafted for the leader boards, my name fit perfectly in the crowned spot and anyone who challenged was sure to fail underneath the sole of defeat.

The air smells of fresh lumber and I find myself making way through the crowd of check-ins and lines for events in which are to take place. Citizens scattered and shoves of making by are the only way things will get done here, and it is the way I pull through. Delicate wanderers stare upon me, eyes acting as daggers, quickly deflected back in their path at a glare of a loaded pistol that knocks them away cold. And I didn't necessarily care if being "rude" was a silent whisper underneath frightened tongue's, because I came here to win, not play nice with fragile glass. If I needed to shatter any, then so be it.

A quick eye handed generously to my opponents as they run one-by-one through the obstacle course. Nothing compared in skill set from what I've seen already in those who've gone through, perhaps besides one girl who was impressive enough to hit no logs. My attention is drawn as the sound of a voice rings out towards me-

You're up, are you ready?"

Pike wanted something to distract him form the anger of his boring life in Seven. The only thing he ever truly enjoyed was the fact that he got live by so many trees. He was too accustomed to the nature around him that he couldn't imagine living anywhere else, there would be not enough forest around him. When the Mayor of Seven stated that there would be something called a Highlands Games, Pike couldn't refuse to participate. This would be something to take his mind off of running away, to live in the wilds with just his ax and whatever he could carry.

There was an obstacle course that he found intriguing, so he signed up for it. He was never going to take these things seriously, until he saw others training, practicing with ax throwing and agility training, so he started his regiment of strength and conditioning. His used heavier and heavier axes at work to build his muscles while he and some acquaintances set up their own mini course in the lumber yard. It was fun for them, and while Pike tried his best to win, he knew that this wasn't something to be taken to heart. Games are fun to him and he enjoyed the thrill of winning. So why no try?

Before him they set up a part of the obstacle course, hanging logs and a ladder climb, he was not supposed to touch the logs and more time got added on if he did, the official explained before. And the two times would be added up. Simple enough, Pike thought to himself as he watched the others before him go threw, simple until most of the people started touching the logs. Then it was his turn. Warmed up and ready to go, he went at the whistle.

After a few days of exploration, her curious mind arrives at one conclusion- Seven looks a hell of a lot like twelve. Today, specifically, long brunette locks are drawn back in a tight tie, her dark eyes scowling at the logs before her.

Duck under, without hitting one. It seems simple enough. Memories flood through her mind of when she were younger, searching in the dank crawlspace below their old house in a game of hide and seek.

Damien never found her there- fear grips his heart whenever he looks at the dark holes, visions of collapsing beams surfacing to the forefront of his mind.

But that all happened when she were far, far smaller. Six years old, at best, and her muscles long adjusted for walking, running, pulling, tugging, scream as she lowers herself to the ground, staring nervously ahead. Thin fingers descend to dirt, her eyes closing as she inhales.

The sound of a gong, bell, whatever sends her sprawling forward through the fray.

Her body shifts and on elbows and knees, she pushes herself forward. Maybe being skinny was a good thing- her back avoided the swinging logs, missed bruises and streaks of purple adrenaline spurs her forward until she emerges from the obstacle, her heart pounding loudly in her chest.

Her hands, sopping wet and coated with mud rub themselves carelessly on her shorts as she emerges from the last log, glaring upwards at a long, vertical length of rope. She glances down at her fingers, ungloved, and groans at herself, shaking her head from side to side.

Today was going to be a long day.

Already, the feelings of excitement dip and ebb away as her fingers seize the rope, her feet attaching to a knot in the bottom. It looks easy enough, and she begins her ascent.

After the second knot, her limbs scream for release, and her shocked face peers upward. She refuses to give in to the pain, the rivers of failure running through her veins and across her face.

So, she continues.

And is disappointed.

She wakes up with a screaming jaw and a pounding head, dragging herself up with the aftermath of the Games shackling her body to the mattress. An aspirin or two later her mouth still whines in defiance with every word she speaks. A prescription of therapeutic swearing doesn't seem to make the cut so she swallows her words and spits out her pride through the grinding of teeth and harsh glances at her competitors. She's past caring about first, second and third place - all that matters is that she doesn't make a damn fool of herself by finishing last or falling on her face. Medicine can cure a broken jaw but it can't fix an ego too big for her tiny frame, and in exchange for her soothing skull she finds the world tipping every so often, a blurred millisecond in an uneasy universe.

She curses the medicine flooding her system, curses the siren in her brain, and curses the official who fires the gun to begin this godawful course.

His eyes study each one of his opponents. In this district, he is the outsider. He is the one intruding upon their own camp and home and he is nothing but a visitor, but somewhere deep within his mind and heart, he wants to rule it all. He wants to not only conquer these so called 'games' but also make a name for himself. Back home with his family, even his father understands his place. A man with a mission, who will not back down, breaths in a deep breath of seven's air and smirks as he takes in the scenery and course in front of him.

"Logs. Don't hit them. Work fast. Work better than the others." His eyes momentarily scan the heads of the ones that would be his competition and then with a roll of his eyes, parts from them. With his hands rubbing together, he sets his sight on the end of the course, expecting to make it through with no trouble.

To take home a win would surely prove to his family that he was meant to be the head of house. First task: logs. Second task: ropes. Skill and strength would be proven here. A devilish, half smile appears on his lips moments before he takes his chance.
