Cheese Roll

Cheese roll
Welcome to the Cheese roll. The objective of this game is simple. Each of you will stand at the top of this hill. When the signal is given, you will start running down the hill, and an official will push a huge wheel of cheese down the hill. You will be timed running down the hill trying to catch the cheese, but be careful because you could wipeout. If you wipeout, you can restart at the top again 1 more time; however, the two times will be added together. If you fail to catch the cheese the second time, you will have a 30 second penalty added to your time. So be careful. High above the stands is people watching you, spectating your every move. Make them proud.

The execution of this event is simple. You may roleplay your characters getting ready to start. At the bottom of your post, you will roll [*roll=300+1000] to see how fast you run down the hill, you will also roll [*roll=1-5] to see if you catch the cheese at the bottom of the hill or whether you wipe out. (example: if you roll 1208, a decimal point will be added making it 12.08 seconds.) After you post, feel free to edit your post with the results. If you wipeout, please reroll the time dice and the dice to see if you succeed or wipe out again. After everyone has posted, you can edit in the results for everyone. This will be updated continually for the results.

Why would someone waste a perfectly good wheel of cheese? Do they not realize how many families that could feed? Shaking my head I look around preparing myself for what this stupidity is. For the longest time all I ever wanted was to become my own being, and now I have. I've broke away from mother and father. I severed the ties, and they'll never see me again unless they watch from above. Taking a deep breath, I fight to remain calm and steady. What a joke. It's sickening to watch them waste this, but I might as well have fun while I can because who knows when my next bout of freedom would arrive. Positioning my feet, I prepare to make a fool of myself because that's all I have done thus far.

Finally, the one event I have been looking forwards too, the cheese roll. I have fared well in these games, despite the disastrous performance in the egg toss, I actually won the roulette too…I beat the mayor. This event is my most anticipated because I love running…and I love cheese. However I am too well known to be clumsy and well…running down a vertical drop is just a clumsy person’s hell.

Looking down the hill, the images of me plummeting down it would play out in my head. What happens if I break my leg? I’ll get time off work…

Stretching my legs a bit, I’d at least prepare my body for this run, there is no point jinxing my failure. Positioning myself, I’d glance down the hill, readying my body to make a fool out of its self.

Pounding against the dirt, my chin would be my bow, as it plummeted through the turf. Stretching out my arms, I'd try to stop my body falling down the hill. Rolling to the bottom, I'd eventually stop, the cheese roll in my sight. Pawing my arms out to it, I'd watch as it would glide away from my reach. "Goodbye fine cheese" Laying on the ground, I'd try to kick my brain into gear, to try and get me back onto my feet. Powering my legs to raise, I'd remove myself from my dirty grave. Glancing around, I'd spit out the turf which began to call home in my mouth. I am never running down a hill again.

(The other competitions beg to differ.)

My hands are tense against the wheel of cheese. (Why cheese, the most disgusting food possible?) It looks so absurd atop the hill, awaiting to be released and race down the slope. Who would have that rolling cheese down a hill could make such a fuss.

Ridiculous or not, here I am, ready to let go.

From one wacky race to another: the cheese roll.

This one seemed to be the most fun of them all. The contestants seem to realise that this doesn't prove you're worthy of every title known to mankind, but it proves you can catch a cheese wheel.

And to me, that's worth fighting for.

Throughout my time here at the Highland Games, I've noticed how insignificant actions can be. Falling from every stump in the obstacle course didn't lead to the end of the world, it just caused a slight embarrassment which soon died down. Coming from a place where it's natural for me to fade into the shadows and feel anxious if someone dare lay their eyes on me, it makes me feel at one with myself knowing I've left some of that person behind.

And though thinking like that perhaps can make my skin crawl because it's so cheesy, I realise it'll never be as cheesy as the wheel which is about to roll alongside me.

The wind on my cheek is cold: winter is coming. Being on top of a hill really doesn't compare to anywhere else I've been, not really. Even in dreams, I don't think there's a place my imagination can conjure up which is as cold as this.

I jump up and down frantically, trying not to let the cold freeze me in my steps before the wheel of cheese has even been released.

The other contestants appear to be having little to no luck in terms of this event which causes my stomach to whirl. It settles however: it's fun.

Faces peel from my sides until I'm lined up against the bad boy cheese himself. It's a long way down from this frightfully cold hill, but whether I come in first place or last---

Cheese Roll had seemed a simple enough competition when I'd etched my name across the dotted lines. I had not envisioned running down a hill as fast as I can whilst chasing a wheel of cheese - but the idea brought a bemused smirk to my face and a chuckle fell through the air in front of me. I had my untimely hand-eye coordination to thank for my failure in the egg toss, but how hard could running be? If a wheel of cheese was going to send me tumbling to mortifying failure then perhaps I would realise that I was not cut out for competitions or winning. Whether or not I'll keep trying will be determined by how horrified I am at myself when it all finally ends.

Part of me wants to know why we're chasing cheese down a hill, but the other part of me wants to chase the cheese and catch it. So many families can be helped out if I manage to win this because I won't keep it for myself. Yet as I prepare myself I wonder what it must look like to those watching in the stands. Foolish? Dumb? Stupid? If I was watching, I know those are the words I would use. But I place my feet firmly on the ground. Heels dig in so I can take off sprinting when I'm told to go. Perhaps just having fun with this would help, however, I can't stop looking at the cheese. I want it. It's enough to last several people months especially in this district. A small smile twists across my face the moment the signal is given, and I run down the hill hoping I don't plummet to my death.
