Somewhere between the aching restless slumbers and the constant running away from his problems, Dane Allore had lost his peace of mind. Dreams of his past lives came and went, usually. Until recently, he hardly ever had them anymore. But night upon night was met with his brother's retreating form and no matter how quickly Dane ran, he could never catch him. Eventually he was all alone n the forests, sounds of creatures and monsters all around his shivering form. Or perhaps he would find himself in the orphanage again, utterly alone while the others laughed at him and teased his name for all it was worth.
He found it easier to simply not sleep.
Andy usually didn't mind staying up with him for most of the night, where they'd share snacks and talk about their lives, and he was grateful for it. Grateful for him. Alida, on the other hand, would have only ever stayed in his company with bribery, and he didn't mean food or quality conversation.
His family's recent fascination with the sister of the victor was not something he understood. She was a reckless soul who got her kicks for damming herself and anyone who got too close, and he wished it would have been that easy for Andy and Alida to see. He wished it would have been easy to explain to them, but then again, how could he? Once, Dane Allore was a lost boy and they were his rescuers. It was no secret that Paige Lowe was just as lost, maybe more.
This time, however, he wondered if she was just emotionally confused or if she was honest to ripred lost, since typically his walks in the middle of the night didn't involve seeing familiar faces that seemed equally uninterested in company.
Which, of course, meant he was practically obligated to go and say hi to her.
"You know, I'm only here because Andy had to be up early in the morning." He joined her against a wooden fence that overlooked a pasture of shadows. "What's your excuse? Or do you have one? Did you mean to end up so close to my house, or?" His tone was light and filled with delighted humor, a feat rare for him. "It's only about a ten minutes' walk from here, which I'm sure you already knew."
In the night, her red hair seemed metallic, liquid gold swaying with her pale, moon-kissed skin. She glared at him through honey eyes dyed black and he bent his neck and his shoulders to meet her face to face. Only inches seperated them, and he let loose a slight chuckle because, frankly, if her lips weren't poisoned, he might have kissed them.
"Coming to see me, were you?"
