I v y R o s e
( twelve . female . district ten . blind )
My world is darkness. It surrounds me, wraps its greedy arms around me, smothering me.My world is darkness.Fear spreads through my veins like ice.My world is darkness.Once color used to bloom, now washed away by the endless nightMy world is darkness.I am surrounded by nothingness, I spread my fingers in front of my eyes but I see nothingMy world is darkness."Dont be scared," they whisper but I was terrified. My world is darkness. My world is a never ending blackness, darker than ink, and I am alone.I am scared.
She dreams. She dreams of rolling hills. She dreams of meadows filled with horses munching away on the grass- grass so green, so delicious looking, that she wanted to join them. She dreams of a time when she could see, when she could look out the window and watch as the rain dribbled down the glass, following the trail with a small finger. She dreams of the nights she spent laying in the haystacks, her brother at her side, pointing up at the twinkling stars. She remembers the way he used to smile, the way his eyes used to dance with excitement as he pointed out a new constellation. She remembers the stars, she remembers them so clearly and sometimes she is so sure, that amongst the darkness she could still see them. (But she knew she couldn't. She knew it was all just a figment of her imagination.)
The picture perfect image of her sister, when standing next to each other one would struggle to tell them apart. Long blonde hair, cascades down her back, surrounding her in a ring of gold. In the sun it might appear as though she was an angel stepping down from the clouds above. Her eyes are like the sky. They reflect everything around her, but they are unseeing- almost misty in appearance.
They were her biggest flaw. They were unfixable- maybe had she lived somewhere else the story would be different, she wouldn't have to dream about all these because she would be able to be part of them, surrounded by them. But she didn't live else where. She lived in district ten, where life was hard, where poverty was not unfamiliar. She had a condition known as detached retina, causing her sight, over the span of six months to totally diminish until she saw nothing, her sight extremly hazy, like it was constantly night time on the night of a new moon. But during this never ending night no stars sparkled.
Only an overwhelming darkness.
