kirito
victor of the 70th hunger games
Anticipation wriggled through every inch of Kirito's body like an unwelcome parasite. His brief intervention with Harbinger had left him with more connection with the boy than Kirito was expecting. In every word Harbinger spoke Kirito saw the clear hues of Crusader and of his past self. The Kirito who was lost in the torrential down pour of blood in the games. Kirito knew all too well what the games could do to tributes like Harbinger. They could warp minds into nothing but acidic mush and leave the fighter with nothing left besides the urge to kill. However Harbinger seemed to much stronger than Kirito was, so much more aware than the frightened boy from the last games. Kirito just silently prayed that the old saying the bigger the tree the harder the fall would not be applying now.
Still even in the whispering mists of hysteria Kirito knew the golden laced lining of sanity and self forgiveness could be retrieved if one searched hard enough. Lucky for Kirito he had another guiding will beside his own to assist him when all he could see or smell was that of scarlet blood. This simple being was no other than his fellow mentor Katelyn who brought him back from the shatter splinters of his lost reality and into the sheering light of truth. With the simple support of her words and her friendship Kirito was able to crawl slowly back out of the chasm he was dwelling in. Yet even now he could still feel the constant mumbles of Kiri stirring deep within his core.
Sounds of cheers and clapping from the screen in front of him pulled Kirito's attention back from his past and into his present. Kirito could feel an unpleasant nausea swelling in the confines of his gut when he looked upon both of District Two's volunteers. In each of there eyes was the same thing Kirito had seen within Wyatt's, Sue's, Olivia's, and even Key's. Their eyes held the scars of death. In fact the girl's glare made Kirito's own gaze falter from the screen as he quickly jotted down several words in very large underlined letters on his note pad.
BEWARE DISTRICT TWO.
Although simple Kirito felt more truth in that simple warning than anything else surrounding him. However not even the sheer chills that scorned down Kirito's neck from that Reaping was enough to pull his eyes away for even a single second. Kirito stood there and watched every last reaping continously jotting down note after note such as volunteer here and rival district there. Kirito even found himself starring several of the tributes he thought would be smart targets for Harbinger and Annora. It was sadistic of course, but then again it was their lives on the line after all and they needed to know everything they could before their gong rang.
A thin stream of air slipped through Kirito's lips as he slid his pencil in his pocket and closed the old journal tightly shut. Another thought found its way into Kirito's mind as he moved away from the small screen and looked around the large marble building. As his eyes skimmed over the oh so victorious portraits of Katelyn and himself he realized the lack of her presence. Without her beside him Kirito felt that they were missing out on valuable time to plan strategies with one another, they were partners now after all.
Kirito's feet took him up several small flights of stairs as his eyes bounced from room to room until finally he found exactly who he was searching for. Staring down at one of their two tribute's files was Katelyn with her golden locks slung carefully onto her back. Gently Kirito knocked on the door as he entered the room and made his way across to her side. Kirito could feel his nerves welling up with what to say as his hands fiddled with one another in a sort of awkward dance.
Finally Kirito let himself lean up against a wall just beside his past mentor as he caught just a few words about Annora and her dark past from within the sanctions of her file. Apparently there was more to the blank faced pretty girl than Kirito would have expected, and that would most surely help her through the storms to come. Still though Kirito figured it was best to break the silent ice and get the ball rolling. If they were going to be any help to the tributes they had to start somewhere, and although Kirito wouldn't admit it he was quite excited to work alongside her. She was a legend and now together they would be making a break for history.
"Well," Kirito said softly through the dust filled air of silence, "We have two rather interesting tributes this year. However after watching the Reapings they naturally have their work cut out for them, but I am sure it's nothing we can't handle together right?" Although the question was rather rhetorical Kirito found a hint of desperation in his voice as he looked towards her. If Katelyn believed they could bring one of them home, then hell, they would bring one home. Kirito just needed to ensure he wasn't the only one with hope fluttering through his beating heart.
