Lyon
always pays her debts
At the gates of the place beyond life, Circe Lyon and Orion Hammerfell stand guard. It's traditional from some of the recently departed to greet the newest sacrifices. She had grumbled about it, avoided the first soul. She's known - in the way she now knew how light moved in Orion's eyes and life eternal beat in Elya's heart - that Draco Wellings was not meant for her to greet. He had someone else he was looking for, a girl whose path hadn't yet crossed Circe's.
It was only a matter of time, endless and infinite, before they would meet.
She'd slipped from Jaime's embrace, run her fingers through the entwined length of Gunner and Elya's hair. She paused at the edge of the grove - at least, that's what their home looked like to her - to cup Nat's rosy cheek. "You can join them, you know?" But of course he did. Here, they know everything and everyone.
The gates of iron and mist arch over Circe and Orion. She slides her hand easily into his, her long fingers brushing over rough callouses before she splits his fingers and holds fast. "I missed you," she teases, though they've been apart merely moments. Or perhaps they've been apart forever, or never.
Never again. Circe pushes herself up onto her tiptoes, reaching for him, when the mist parts and a girl stumbles towards them. "Careful," Circe admonishes Paige Hope, gathering the girl's name from the essence of her. "Welcome to the beyond. Whenever you're ready to find your sister, you need only think of her." She inclines her head and then turns her gaze back to Orion. "Did I miss anything?"
Her smile is fresh and full. She knows she hasn't missed anything, that she will never miss anything ever again. This is everything. If Paige lingers, Circe doesn't notice. She's kissing Orion, dropping her lips against his chest and chin and cheeks and lips. They move back together until her back is against the iron pillar of the gates. "Do you think we're done already for today?" Her voice is full of wonder, dropping deeper with the promise of forever just like this.
But you can make me immortal.
And he had. He had cut away all of the pain and grief and rage and loss. She felt only one thing now, in the steady bang bang bang of her whole heart.
"I think ours are waiting for us," she whispered, drawing her hands over his chest and shoulders. Ours. Gunner la Torre, Nat Krigel, Elya Johnwayne. Forever.
