My mind races as I stare out the door at Turian and Kraygon. I’m unsure of what to do right now except stare at them wondering what’s going on. Kraygon looks awful. His ghostly pale face terrifies me, and it’s been so long since I’ve seen him, that I want to go wrap my arms around him. To tell him that I’m here, but I feel something much more urgent is on the line. Finally Turian speaks. “Maddy it’s Cowie. She’s collapsed. I don’t know if she’ll make it.” His words eat through me. Cowie has been in our family for seven years now. A young Esme brought her back home after going to the auction. She was the happiest kid in the world.
Yet it feels like the world is standing still. That the entire sky is falling apart right above my head. “I will get my stuff.” I run inside the house as fast as I can heading to my room. Many lanterns turn on inside the house as Ma and Pa and Evelyn and everyone else wakes from the commotion going on around them. I try to be quiet. I try to make nothing happen, but when Ma asks what’s going on, I can only give a simple answer. “Cowie.”
Her eyes widen as she stares at me like she’s just been hit by a wagon or some sort of tractor. But I don’t have the time to stand here and wait for her. I’m moving again until she’s out of my sight, and I can hear the entire family rushing around. Evelyn is crying in the background, and I know it’s because of the noises. I know she can’t handle them, but right now we are in the midst of a dire situation. Cowie is sick. And I will not let her die. Not under my watch.
Once I’m in my room, I grab my bag holding all of my tools I’ve collected throughout my journey. Medicines that I have brewed myself. I’ve tested them out making sure they’re safe, but right now none of that matters anymore. I have to save this cow. Not for me. Not for anyone living right now. But for Esme.
I sprint down the hall and towards the front door once more as the entire world slowly fades away. Nothing is there. Nothing can stop me. Nothing will stop me. But what do I do? What if I can’t save her? What if I fail? No. I can’t fail. I won’t fail. Not today.
Inhaling sharply, I fight to regain my composure as I look at Kraygon and Turian once more. “Kraygon, bro, I really think you should lie down. You look like you’re going to pass out at any possible second.” I don’t know if he’ll listen or not, but I need him to. I will save Cowie, and then I’ll come and help him. “Turian, do you have your lantern from the barn? It appears everyone will be going, and I need to make sure we all can see.
I close my eyes for a second trying to relax my nerves before quickly heading towards the barn.
