They were prepared, they had gotten what supplies they needed and had headed home to his mother's place in District nine. The entry into his home district was rather harrowing, but somehow they made it without being caught. His mother had welcomed the two of them with open arms and plenty of tears. Lindy had been accepted into the family in a moment, and he knew that his mother approved of her. That was good, that meant he had made the right choice after all. The next, though, was going to be the toughest.
Staying in District nine, while a nice thought, was going to be next to impossible. They needed to get out of Panem, otherwise they would be looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives. That meant leaving his mother and District nine behind in favour of District thirteen. He could only hope that it existed like the rumors said, that people lived there and would welcome them with open arms. Otherwise, well he would have to get a lot better at hunting.
When he told his mother she didn't seem all that surprised, only saddened. "Be careful, boy," was her advice. He vowed that he would, and he told her to sell all of his things in order to have money for herself. The smile she gave him was heartbreaking, but they both knew this was what he had to do. Before they left, he let his mother in on the final secret he held. "Do it now, you never know what could happen." His mother knew a hard path when she saw one, and she also knew that if he didn't say what he meant to then he might not ever get to say it.
The day before they were going to leave, he knelt in front of Lindy. Bracing himself on his one knee, he looked into her face with the most stable smile he could manage - it wasn't very stable. "Lindy," he took in a breath, trying to keep his voice steady, "you mean so much to me. Please, let's make this journey as one." Pulling a loop of intertwined copper and steel wire, he looked down only for a moment before lifting his eyes and the ring to her gaze. "Will you marry me?"
