In the beginning all I knew was pain and depression. It latched onto my life like an unwanted leech draining me of any source of delight or happiness it could find. However, it wasn't just one leech, there were two of them. Each one of my parents were a various type of devil. I would often awake every morning expecting a lashing from my Mother's hands and I would prepare for bed by attempting to hide from the drunken hits that flew from my Father. Needless to say my life was just about as shitty as anyone's could be. Yet thanks to this world I was brought up in I find myself stronger because of it. A little more wary and not very quick to trust people but strong none the less. In my mind I knew if I survived the lamentations of that house then I could survive anything.

By the time I reached seven years old my parents had finally over stepped the seemingly invisible line of Panem abuse as my Father lashed out at a Peace Keeper. From then the fight only escalated with my Mother eventually getting absorbed as well into it. Thankfully though due to the severity of their actions they were taken away to a place I would never have to lay my gaze upon them again. With them finally gone from my life the Peace Keepers sent me straight into the orphanage system, which only proved to be just as crappy. In fact, the very first place I was stored at was practically a dilapidated disease house. Conditions in that orphanage got so awful the Peace Keepers had no choice but to relocate us when I was only ten. Without a doubt though I do not miss a single day of the three years I spent as a prisoner in that place.

For the next few years of my already long life I lived within the sanctions of a decent orphanage. For the most part I remained locked away in my room as I let the world spin idly on around me. At first I wasn't sure what to do besides stare out the window and create fiction filled stories about the people walking on the street below. Yet one day I spotted a group of young girls dancing through a window across the street, yet it was unlike a dance I had ever seen before. Every move they made and twirl they preformed was filled with elegance and grace. From that moment I became determined to learn their dance, because at that point I was finally ready to have a little bit of happiness back in my heart after such a long drought.

Little did I know that as I learned the sacred art of Ballet I would actually be quite the natural at it. In only a few short years I was capable of preforming advanced dances that only a rare few had done in the past. Every time I ended up practicing or even just dancing in general I felt more alive than I had ever been. Part of my success I give credit to my five foot six stature and very thin body scale. Whether it was genetics or malnourishment that allowed myself to be so finely tuned for Ballet I didn't care, I was more than grateful for either. In fact it would be thanks to my love of this dance and for the beauty of things in life that would lead me onto my next step in life. To a place I know longer had to worry about the chains of imprisonment or the false hopes of adoption.

I recall that it was only three years ago that I was doing what I did nearly everyday. As the other children of the orphanage went screaming outside to mess around play I made my way into the largest room lit perfectly thanks to a large window. From their I played several measures of a well known Ballet song I was practicing on piano, a skill I had slowly acquired alongside Ballet since I sadly didn't have the money to afford an actual music player of any kind. Shortly after that though I let the song sway through my body and let myself glide and pivot across the room. I felt all the feelings of being alive rushing through my veins as I would leap and spin. I felt so wrapped up in the apex of my dance that I didn't notice the woman standing just outside the massive window watching me until I had entirely finished. However the moment I saw her a brief screech tumbled from my lips only to be met by an odd smile on her end. Little did I know that she would be taking me home with her no more than an hour later.

The walk to my new home didn't take long at all but once I got their I couldn't help but feel my jaw drop at the sight of it. Compared to all the places I had been living before it was more beautiful and well taken care of then all the rest combined. Yet it was as we walked into the house that the woman explained to me just exactly what the place was. Apparently it was a home for girls with special talents in the fine arts and mine was naturally Ballet dancing with piano playing as well. According to the woman who had saved me from the cruel grip of the orphan system I was very adept when it came to artistic knowledge. At that time I simply nodded because I knew she was right. All my life I had been searching for the beauty in things for all I had was darkness. So for myself to be naturally in tune with the arts just seemed to reflect my passionate personality.

As the time passed I learned to fall in love with the home and the people that lived with me. Most, if not all, of the other talented girls occupying the place were quite friendly or at least weren't vicious to say the least. One girl I had grown to like particularly was known as Jequirity. Everything she did was filled with so much courage and passion, it was almost impossible not to look up to her and see greatness. Not to mention, it was Jequirity who was the very first girl to greet myself and welcome me to the family. It was thanks to her that I really realized just what having a real family was like. However apparently even the vile wishes of Snow can pierce the purity of a strong and talented family such as my new one.

The day Jequirity was reaped caused a major swing in the house as we all looked for answers but simply couldn't conjure any. We all knew Jequirity was strong but we didn't know just how strong until we watched as she pushed through the early portions of her games. However everytime I watched the pain spread across her face I forced myself to turn away in disbelief. The worst feeling though was the days I would spend waking and for just a brief second I forgot Snow had stolen one of our brightest stars. Then in only a matter of mere moments reality came crashing back down upon my head like an iron hammer.

One moment in particular during the current games really effected myself the most as I quickly retreated to the bathroom after the feast had ended. Seeing Jequirity's foot stolen from her body had made myself aware of what I truly was. All this time I viewed myself and the girls around me as children but as I looked in the bathroom mirror I did not see a little girl. I saw a girl with hair as dark as oak tree wood and eyes as bright as blue lightning. I saw my pale skin as white as snow and my annoying small nose, ears, lips, and body in general. In fact I finally truly saw why some people use to joke and call me elfie. Yet above all I saw a young woman staring back at me, not a powerless child too afraid of her parents to fight. As awful as it may sound, thanks to Jequirity's suffering I was finally able to truly come to terms with who I was, and that is something I am determined to tell her thank you for if I see her again.
