As before I went under ::.

The sword swung, cutting through the air before passed by Harbinger Rhode’s by no more than half a centimetre, barely scraping the hairs on his skin before it smacked into the mulchy dirt at their feet, becoming lodged there for a moment. The echoes of the contact rippled through the girl from four, who had almost toppled forward at the sheer weight of the weapon. Daria had her eyes scrunched shut, her whole body writhing with fear, as her hands gripped the hilt of the sword so tightly that her delicate knuckles turn paler than they already where; the girl could feel her nails digging into her palms, drawing blood, as she held the sword there, shaking.

Daria Staite knew she had missed, she had purposely missed. Daria Staite had missed killing Harbinger Rhodes on purpose because- because. Well, she was human. She was not a robot doppelganger, nor was she some mindless mutation created in the lab of the Capitol, nor was she the monster which hid under her bed or in the closet. She was human, she had 24 sets of chromosomes, 10 fingers, 10 5 toes, 2 eyes, a nose, a mouth and though her ears did not quite work, she had a pair of those too. Daria Staite was as human as you got, in a world where body modification and alteration was ever so common in the Capitol, and so it was unsurprising that she missed. When humans make mistakes, when they fuck up, they remember that. They remember and make sure it doesn’t happen again and Daria, Daria had made the mistake of killing Jequirity Eckhart.

She didn’t want to make that same mistake again. For a moment, a passing in time, the grief that had weighed Daria down, the weight which pressed against her chest and threatened to drown her, was suddenly lifted as if she had been forgiven. The girl saw Jequirity standing there, the ribbon of red around her neck, all so beautiful and glistening with gems, that memory of how her blade had sliced through the girls neck was burnt on the back of her eyes lids in a searing hot white flash; it was something that would never fade and when she was reminded of her mistake, how she was a murderer, how she had let emotions get the better of her, that sensation that she was drowning on fresh air returned to her.

Opening her eyes, the first thing Daria Staite saw was a small lady bird crawling across the surface of the forest floor. It was tiny, small, insignificant compared to the rest of the world but Daria still watched it for a second. It was stark against the dirty brown floor, its bright red back stood out from amongst the green, the brown and the blackening leaves. It was so content with life that it didn’t pay attention to the flurries of blood which spattered the floor, or the pools of it which filled up the dips and crevasses in the forest floor. It simply scurried over the leaves, avoided the- what would be oceans to it’s tiny self- pools of blood, minding its own business. Lady birds didn’t have to worry about fighting. Daria frowned slightly as something shifted and the insect took off, flittering away into the forest.

Then she remembered Harbinger. The girl turned and saw the mountain of a man getting to his feet and suddenly, Daria’s ~~deaths~~ shadow was no longer looming over him; her shadow had disappeared, broken into a thousand tiny pieces the moment she had missed with her sword, and now death had a new shadow to it’s claim. Daria looked up, cowering in the shadow of Harbinger Rhodes as she watched him tighten his grip on his weapon, his knuckles turning white as his fingers tightened around the pole of his sword. He looks, oddly calm, standing there with his weapon in his big burley hands and when Daria looks into his eyes and see’s that calmness there too, it scares her; no, it terrifies her.

It is odd, finding yourself in the shadow of death. Daria Staite cowers beneath it as fear tugs on the noose and brushes his laughter against the nape of her neck. His shadow washed over her and like the wind it disturbed the flame, ignited on the edge of a wick. She felt it flicker, stutter in its moment of burning brightly within her darkness, and Daria holds her breath as she feels the water, the wind, the fire, the ash within her beginning to swell, to blow, to crackle and to fall once more as Harbinger raises his weapon. Fear fuels every element inside her and her flame burns brighter still as ~~death~~ Harbinger’s weapon begins to move towards her, slowly, surely. Daria blinks as her ocean’s waves crash and break the barriers, tears streaming down her cheeks, as her fire begins to burn through her bones again, turning them to the ash which wraps its devilish fingers round her throat and squeeze so tight she feels like she is drowning again.

Emotions fuel Daria, and she feels erratic. She feels like the fire which burns everything in it’s path, she feels like the hurricane, which swirls across the world with a never ending fury, she feels like the flutter of a butterflies wings as it takes off. Her heart beats faster and faster inside her chest, drumming against her ribs so hard that Daria can feel her own heart beat in every inch of her body. Thu-dump thu-dump thu-dump thu-dump goes her heart as Harbinger’s blade moves slowly through the air towards her. Her whole body shakes, her mind is spinning, the erratic nature of the moment throws Daria off guard and suddenly, surprisingly, her lips open, and she speaks.

“Pl…” her lips stumble, her voice sounds broken, like she wasn’t quite put together properly. The tone of her voice is deep and long, dragging out the words because she cannot hear them; despite being deaf, she had been watching people’s lips all her life, now it was about time someone watched hers. After a fraction of a second pause, Daria speaks her first and last words “Please”

Daria’s gaze does not break from the weapon, painted silver and red, glistening gold in the reflection of the morning sunlight which danced down through the canopy of trees, where the branches cast long and ornate shadows across the forest floor, catching the edges of the pools of blood which bubbled as they sunk into the dirt and rippled as a gentle wind blew, only being truly disturbed when a leaf falls from the trees, spinning and swinging in mid-air before it comes to a rest in a river of blood. This all happens, in a fraction of a second, barely a moment on the clock which is ticking down, down, and has been for 17 years, 3 weeks and 12 hours. The second hand pauses, as if the time master is holding his breath to see if the second lapses and it continues on its merry way and Daria Staite continues, but then- as Harbinger’s sword digs into Daria Staite’s eye socket and enters her brain- the second hand moves again, tick, and Daria Staite’s time is almost up.

She stumbles, her hand letting go of the Claymore, allowing it to fall neatly to the floor in front of her, bouncing slightly as the weight of the sword tries to carry on falling, before she softly reaches up to touch her face. She feels the soft, silky, texture of blood beneath her fingers for the briefest second before she finds herself falling backwards, just like Jequirity had done, until she smacked against the ground beneath her. There is nothing gentle about death, she has learnt. She imagines, for a second, that those final moments for everyone are harsh and unforgiving, even for those who die in their sleep.

Her hand fell to her side as she inhaled, exhaled, inhaled again as blood bubbled inside her head, filling the void where her eye had once been. She inhales as she watches the golden light, through the branches, glistening off the blood which covers the ground around her, only disturbed by a single leaf, as a gentle breeze kisses her cheeks. She sees a bird, a mockingjay, dancing in the branch above her and though she cannot hear it, it is tweeting, singing a little song, a perfect melody ~~the same one Jequirity Eckhart had played in those last moments of life~~ for Daria; it was just a shame that she could not hear it.

Then the girl from Four, Daria Staite, exhales and everything turns black as the flame which had been lighting her way was suddenly blown out with one, singular, puff…

I am a busy person and so it is unusual for me to take notice of people at all until the time of their death. People are living and people are dying all the time, and most of these people are unextrodinary in their formation and so I pay the littlest attention to them until they die, but even then I take my time or wait for them to come to me; as I am death, one grows quite bored of people dying ironically and so sometimes I can scarcely be bothered collect every man, woman, child, who takes their final breath on this forsaken planet.

So when Daria Staite’s light lit up, in front of my very eyes no doubt (I had been to District Four to collect a Victor, interesting fellow who was late into his 60’s by the time I had arrived to collect him for his parting), I very almost ignored her. She was an infant, small, screaming, very uninteresting but she happened to turn ill- meningitis apparently, a common killer in these parts, also very boring- while I was in the area and though she was an infant, I thought I would put time aside to visit Daria Staite within those first few weeks of life. She was so close to death that I knew I wouldn’t have to wait long to take her; except I found myself waiting….and waiting.

Daria Staite lived, beyond my expectations, and it was in that moment, that I knew she would be a very curious being indeed. She had survived against the odds, we had all been so sure she was going to die when the fever took her, and though the sickness took her gift of being able to hear sound, she was no less strong that the next child who grew from her mothers arms to crawling in a matter of months. So I kept an eye on Daria Staite because she intrigued me so; I had taken babes for a simple cough, yet this girl had survived a sickness which ravaged her hearing and stunted her growth. I was never far from the girl, no more than a stones throw away.

She was always surrounded by death, yet, she seemed as if she were life itself. She survived countless beatings from her father, a cruel man who I will take oh so much pleasure in dragging down to hell one day, being almost buried alive, almost drowning. With each hurdle, Daria Staite seemed to bound over every single one without so much as a blink of the eye, and though she doubted it, in herself, I could tell that this simple girl from four was destined for great things; it was just such a darn shame no one saw it until it was- perhaps- too late.

Things had grown quiet with Daria leading up to her reaping on her 17th Birthday and so I had begun to grow bored, admittedly I began to lose interest in the girl and so I wandered Panem, leaving District 4 behind for some time. I had almost forgotten about the baby who’d survived a fierce bout of meningitis, when I saw her light again against the dim and greying world. It shone brighter than ever before and so- like a moth to a flame- I followed her once more because she had become very, very interesting now. She was about to enter the games, quite a mundane time for myself so I usually do not grace the arena myself, but this time I was willing to make an exception for her.

And so I found myself following in the footsteps of Daria once more and I wondered whether she could sense my presence. I was there when she looked into the window of the elevator, after the opening ceremony, I was watching over her shoulder when she battled in front of Dom Copperfeild and Glamour Kinkiade for her Private Training Session, I was there when she rose into the arena, I was there when she lost her foot, when she lost her Rodrick and when she killed Jequirtity Eckhart. I watched her slash the girl from six’s throat and I laughed, because though I found Daria and interesting being and I knew she was destined for great things, I had never expected her to kill. Again, the girl from four was exceeding my expectations once more.

That night, after the Eckhart girl had been safely taken to the other side, put to rest, I stayed close to Daria Staite; even though she threw a pebble at me. It made me chuckle because I realised she had mistaken me for someone else, perhaps fear, and she must of thought that fear had tied himself to her with strings, making her his personal puppet. In reality, I had been the little whisper inside her head, the devil on her shoulder. I do not often meddle with the mortal world, but I thought I would make an exception for Daria Staite. That is, until, I checked my pocket watch and saw that her time was drawing dreadfully close to its ultimatum.

It had been such a shame to realise that Daria Staite was going to die and knowing there was nothing I could really do about that fact. It was not in my place to extend someone’s time, there was no way in my power to alter time. I am not a time master, that is someone else’s job, I am death and I come to people in their final moments to take them away; Daria Staite was no exception to this rule. She was dying, and though she did not know it yet, she was almost out of time. That precious little light which had guided my way, taken me from the path I had chosen to lead, was about to be snuffed out and for the first time in my 4.5 billion years- give or take a few millennia- I felt sad that all I could do now was sit back and wait.

And wait I did. It was a long wait, constantly checking my pocket watch, glancing to Daria Staite who lay sleeping on top of the sea cliffs, who wandered aimlessly across the arena until she found herself in a wooden glen, who found herself against Harbinger Rhodes. The moment I saw him, a great giant from District 11, that this would be Daria’s curtain call. It was a shame really, I had grown quite fond of her and as I watched, taking the form of a simple little Mockingjay, I knew that this did not mean goodbye. Though she was going to die, yes, I knew that she would forever be in a place that I could visit and perhaps- if she wanted- I could have her accompany me on my travels across the world. I- death- was lonely and I would not mind her company.

And so, as I watch the girl from four take her final breath, I flap my wings and fly so. I am to meet her at her final resting place, to escort her to the other side where will we wander together for all eternity in one another’s company; it is a shame, my dear Staite, that we had to say hello too soon, I had hoped perhaps your time would not run out and that it would last well into your later years, where I may have taken you when you were content; for that would have been sweeter than this, your blood and soul tainted by fear and misguided by rage.

Daria Staite woke, softly, as she always has done, on a beach of golden sands and crystal clear blue waters. For a moment, she finds herself frowning because she feels no pain, nor smells blood, thick on the wind which rustles the trees; but they are gone too it seems. The ocean laps at her finger tips as the world sighs at her arrival, bringing with it a gentle gust of easterly wind as the sun begins to rise in the west, at the beach. Slowly, Daria pushes herself into a sitting position, a delicate frown on her forehead; she knows that something is amiss but for some reason, she cannot really remember why.

She looks at her hands, clear of scratches, the aches the pains she is sure she felt before waking up on this beach. As she wiggles her fingers and her toes, she realises that she is no longer missing a foot, something that she felt very glad about; in fact, she felt very glad about everything in this moment, as she reached to touch her eye again to only find it was still in place and hadn’t been replaced with a blood bubbling mess. A smile graced her lips as, slowly, she began to hear the waves which crashed gently against the shore line at her side. What…the…. she thought, distracted by the nose, the sweet song which the world sang every time the waves went whoosh against the golden sands.

She continued to watch the constant drum beat of the tide against the oceans edge, until she heard something further up the beach. A strange, high pitched, jittering noise carried on the wind where it met a curious Daria, who followed the sound with her gaze as it was accompanied by a similar, yet lower chuckles and yells, noises erupted over the sound of the ocean. Turning her gaze up the beach, she saw figures chasing the waves and splashing about in its froth as the tide tumbled against the land; she watched as a girl with dark brown, mahogany hair did a cartwheel in the sand and two taller boys- one blonde and one brown haired- wrestled with each other in an attempt to throw one another into the ocean. Another girl, blonde, green eyed danced about with a third, smaller, girl while a girl with deep brown hair and pale skin stood, perched on her tiptoes, drawing a bow across the strings of a violin. Around their ankles, barking, ran a fox…

As Daria stared, in utter disbelief, as the girl with the mahogany hair turned to look. The girls green eyes stared at her for a long moment, like they did from that faded photograph underneath her pillow, before her lips creased into a big grin. The girls hand reached out to touch one of the boys- the darker haired one- arms as she opened her mouth and screamed at the top of her lungs “GUYS! LOOK! IT’S DARIA!”
All of a sudden, all the people stopped in their tracks and turned to look at Daria, who was still sat in the sand some way down the beach from where they had been playing; the girl with the violin finished her final note before she turned too. It was as they stared, that most of their faces, all of a sudden, became familiar once again. The fox bound to her across the beach, yapping as he did so, unlike before his fur was a stark red and silver, glittering shadow did not follow his footsteps in the sand. Her leapt onto Daria’s chest, licking at her face and the girl from four squealed and giggled in excitement- only pausing to take in the sound of her own, delicate laughter- as the fox leapt from her lap once again and began to dance round her, yapping.

Turning her attention from the fox, her smile brightened as the girl with green eyes and brown hair- just like hers- sprinted up the beach. The photo Daria had kept did not do her elder sister justice. She was beautiful, and her smile which was framed by her freckles which speckled her the arch of her nose and her cheeks and by her long, wavy mahogany hair which bounced against her shoulders as she sprinted down the beach. Her laughter filled the air again as she tackled Daria back down onto the sand with her arms wrapping round her shoulders tightly. Daria found herself laughing too, something that felt so natural beside this girl.

“It’s good to see you! You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting…” her voice trailed off as she pressed a kiss against Daria’s forehead

“Tisha..” Daria spoke, her voice soft and squeaky, catching her off guard so much that she had to clasp her hand to her throat for a moment, but before she could finish her sentence, Tisha had pulled her to her feet and was hugging her again. Daria paused to continue once her sister had pulled out of the hug, but she was cut off by someone with a deep, southern, sweet voice calling her name. Turning, Daria found her breath catching in her chest. Down the beach ran Rodrick, his perfect pearly grin painted across his face, his dark black hair rustling in the wind; behind him she could see Tyler and for a moment she felt sad that he was dead too but that feeling soon passed, a sensation of pure joy washing over her that she was with her friend and Rodrick again.
“Rodrick!” she shouted, pushing past Tisha to run into Rodrick’s open arms. She wrapped her own around his neck as her feet left the ground as he picked her off the ground and span round with her in his arms. She laughed, feeling tears well in her eyes- this time not fuelled by a storm or by fire- as Rodrick laughed with her, pecking her lips briefly before setting her back in the sand briefly, their foreheads pressed together. Daria put her hands on his face as she smiled bright, a giggle still gracing her lips. She inhaled, shakily, almost crying from the joy that filled her body where fire had once raged “Oh Rodrick…I missed you…”

“Missed ya too Daria..” his sweet smile spread across his lips as he took a step back so that Tyler could hug Daria too. Daria held onto Rodrick’s hand for the longest time before she had to let go, turning to Tyler who wrapped his arms around her in a big bear hug; Daria smiled, laughing again, she just couldn’t get enough of the sound of laughter, and she hugged him back. Stepping back, Daria looked at her friends before she turned to the fourth person- fifth if you counted the fox which run up and down, in-between all their legs- who joined them. This face, was freshest in Daria’s memory and for a moment, Daria felt frightened.

“Jeq…” she stumbled over the girls name, the girl from six with the beautiful brown hair and tell-tale smirk and the violin in her hand. Jequritity’s deep brown eyes watched her, and Daria felt herself becoming smaller. She had not expected to see the girl here, nor did she expected what would happen next. After a moment of staring, Jequrirtity took a step forward and wrapped both her arms round her. Daria blinked, the sensations was most bizarre. Just yesterday, Daria had killed this girl, in a viscous fight to the death, and today, that same girl was wrapping her arms round her in a warm and gentle embrace.

After a moment, the girl from six took a step back and smirked “Took you long enough…c’mon, there are some people you should meet”

Jequritity extended her hand for Daria, who found herself pausing, looking over her shoulder at her sister, her lover and her friend who stood behind her with soft smiles on their faces. Daria knew that there was no turning back now, all her life there had been no turning back. There had never been any time that Daria could have turned back the clocks, changed what had once had happened, but in all honesty? She would have never done it anyway, even if she had been given the chance too. Turning back had turned a woman to stone once, turning back was never an option and it never would be; she could no longer dwell on the bad things she had done in her life, nor could she look back at to those good moments either. She could only look forward.

And so she did. Turning back to Jerquitity, she glanced at her hand before taking it. The girls smiled at one another as they began to walk up the beach together, towards the other two girls who had waited for them where they’d been dancing to the music of Jerquitity’s violin.

“Circe!!” Yelled the one girl- who Daria now recognised as Gabrielle O’Dale- who held the hand of Alikia Lombrary, who smiled softly at Daria as Jequritity lead her up the beach “Orion!! Gunner!! Look who’s here!!”

Daria smiled as more people- a tall, slender woman with a lions mane for hair, a dark haired beauty who sauntered towards them, exuding confidence, a tall, beastly man also, a girl with brown hair and sapphire blue eyes, a girl with an eyepatch and a mean grin on her face- made their way down the beach to great them. She felt laughter pass through her lips, the corners of her eyes creasing slightly as she smiled, because in that moment she had never felt happier. She felt bliss, she felt content.

Daria Staite finally found herself at peace.

The Arena was filled by the final heartbeat, a cannon fire, of Daria Staite.

Oh sweet ripred. Wow. Okay, so this is going to be rambley as hell cause I am still reeling over everything that has happened these past few months and my god, what a truley magical past few months it has been. Like seriously. I have had fun in the games before, but oh my god this games. I can't even think of a word to describe the fun I have had during the 71st. It has honestly been such an experience to be in these games, I honestly did not believe I would make it to Day 8, let alone the final 8.

Every game day I was like "well today is the day I die- oh no? Not today? well then maybe the next day" and I kept thinking this again and again cause, hell, I didn't expect to win or get so far and have SO much fun doing it. People talk a lot about losing friends during the games but I think I have done the oppisote, I feel like I have made SO many new friends this games and I am so grateful for that and I think thats part of the reason I have felt that this games has been the best I have been in yet.

Without further ado, lets get onto the thank you's, though, where the HELL do I begin?!

Lets start with my alliance- the bagpipe bitches- because without them, I think Daria would have been toast from day 1. My god, I could have not of asked for a better alliance. I am always really nervous when it comes to reapings because I know if I am reaped, that I'll have to form an alliance with someone and that freaks me out cause at 5am in the morning, and everyone else seems to have buddied off, I just remember thinking "OH MY GOD I AM GONNA DIE ALONE D:" and then I kinda go to bed and wake up and realise that there are a bunch of people PMing me about alliances.

I remember partnering with Mattio and being hella excited cause- Mattio, fetty, you are such a fab person, so chill and lovely and so I felt really happy that you wanted to be my ally and I am so glad you did cause Rodrick and Daria's relationship in this games was the cutest thing ever and it made me cry and you're an amazing friend and writer and bleehh!

I then remember being asked about Lance joining the alliance and I wasn't sure cause at first I was like "Lance who?" but by god, I do not regret saying "Yeah sure he can buddy with us" cause Lance YOU ARE ALSO A LOVELY PERSON AND AMAZING WRITER AND TETHER'S BREAKUP WILL FOREVER HAUNT ME but you have been such a great ally that hell, next games, we should hookup again if we are both reaped and then outside that we need to thread cause you are so fabulous.

Then there was Cameron and I kinda laughed when someone asked me if I would mind Cam joining my alliance, not because the idea of Cam joining my alliance was funny but the fact that I was told that he wanted to join me partly because he'd a) heard great things and b) because of those beautiful pre-reaping selfies I had posted with my bottle of wine. Tbh from that moment on I knew it was meant to be (sorry for being so cheesy but I warned you) and I am so greatful to have had you in my alliance Cam. You really made the bagpipe bitches, made me laugh and cry from said laughter on numreous occasions and I fricking love your writing and Heather and gaah <3 I love all three of you so much!

OKAY so now we've done the allies, lets get onto other people, this list is long and my god I think I am going to cry. Anyway, GAMEMAKERS AYA AND KAY OH MY GOD YES. Okay so, I love you guys. Seriously. You are amazing people.

Aya, evil overlord, I honestly love your sense of humour and your evilness and as you said to me, I feel like I know you a bit better after interacting these games, and I think you really REALLY made this games. Also can I just point out, that I really love Dom Copperfield, not sure why but she makes me grin whenever I read those ambigous posts from her talking over the phone or what not cause I sense evil plans in the works.

KAYak! YOU! my god, how do I even begin? I cant? I don't know where to start? Well, pfft, lets start with how awesome you are as a GM! You're incredibly sweet and have made me laugh on occasion and ahh okay when you messaged me about how wonderful Daria's writing was I like legit melted into a puddle ~~no seriously, i am a puddle, i am writing this from my puddle state~~ because you are an amazing writer and I love you so much <3 also I am sorry you cried at Daria's death <3

Lets move on to Arx. Babes. Lovely. Hello. Oh my god where to begin. Okay so, Jeq will forever be one of my fave tribbies, I have just been reading over her bio over the past few hours and crying in my puddle form and my god I love her so much and I loved Daria and her's relationship. That beef between the girls will FOREVER be my fave cause tension and drama is juicy and when she killed Rodrick, survived another day? Had me all excited cause I love stuff like that. And their final fight, my god, you are so right when you said that it was how it was meant to be <3 congrats on being my first kill in a games ever ~~twice~~.

Cato. Cato. Oh my lordy Cato. Firstly, I am going to say that I love Harbinger. He's great. I mistook him for a Career for the whole games cause I am an idiot but thats why I love him so much; he's from 11 yet I feel like he has the persona of a career and gaaaah! Our fight, our fight has got to have been the best, the worst, the funniest thing to ever happen. I felt like we laughed, we cried, and laughed some more all the way through that fight. I don't know about you but I kinda knew that the moment I missed I was gonna be insta'd or something like that and then it happened and I laughed- initially- cause the irony was hilarious. Don't feel bad for killing me, you gave me my first insta and god damn it was so glorious. Good luck my dear and I hope you win this games!

EVERYONE ELSE WHO LIKE, MESSAGED ME, ROOTED FOR DARIA, CRIED OVER HER DEATH: MY GOD I AM RUNNING OUT OF THE ENGLISH VOCAB TO EVEN DESCRIBE HOW YOU ALL MADE ME FEEL. LIKE IF I HAVEN'T MENTIONED YOU BY NAME, DON'T FEEL BAD CAUSE I FEEL LIKE I'D BE HERE WHEN THE FRY WOKE UP IN THE YEAR 3000 STILL LISTING YOU ALL AND HOW AMAZING YOU ALL ARE BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY OF YOU AND I WAS SERIOUSLY OVERWHELMED BY ALL YOUR MESSAGES THE OTHER NIGHT, OF THANSK OF PRAISE AND ALL THE OTHER THINGS!! I want to say thank you to you, because without you guys, this games would not have been the same. Honestly.
