Troylus hesitated before knocking on the door. His mother had made him put some strange stuff in his hair, and had made him comb it back, but it still wasn't behaving itself properly and it was making him feel self-conscious. So was wearing his father's best shirt - it didn't fit him properly, and his chest was threatening to pop a few buttons if he breathed in too deeply.
He was cold too, but his mother had refused to let him wear his one and only coat, saying it was too ragged and threadbare for such an occasion. She had walked him to the corner of the Ephedra's street, before taking his coat off him and kissing him on the cheek. "Be a good boy and watch your manner with them important folks, eh?" Then she had hurried back home to care for his father. It was alright though. His nerves were keeping him warm enough and soon he'd be inside this warm and cosy looking family home.
This whole event was all his parent's idea anyway. Before he hurt his back his father had met Mr Ephedra, while working on the docks while their ships were both in port, and he respected him a great deal. Troylus imagined his father was a bit jealous of Mr Ephedra's seven children, compared to just one in his own case, but his father loved Troylus far too much to say so.
The look of joy in his father's eyes when he told Troylus that his mother had arranged for him to 'court' one of MR Ephedra's daughter's, made it too difficult for Troylus to say no. Besides, he was an obedient child who would never have been able to live with himself if he disobeyed his parent's wishes.
He'd talked to his parents about how no one 'courted' anymore, and agreed to meet this girl for a 'date' instead, and just see how it went. It was incredibly embarrassing to think that his parents were trying to set him up with someone he'd never even met. His mother wasn't even completely sure what the girl's name was. She said it was something like Yucky, but Troylus couldn't bring himself to say that in case it was wrong. His mother had instructed him to say 'Miss Ephedra' which was only proper as her father was a ship's captain, and they were much better off than his own family by far.
That hadn't filled Troylus with much confidence, so it was with great trepidation that he stood on the doorstep trying to summon the courage to knock. He was a very shy person at heart, and he'd never really been on a date before anyway. He'd spent some time with some lovely girls now and then, especially when he was in a port and the other sailors got him drunk in a pub. That seemed to lower his inhibitions and he became quite flirtatious and confident.
But he hadn't drunk anything today, of course. He couldn't afford to buy any alcohol, and his parents frowned on him drinking at his age.
He tapped on the door so quietly he was sure no one inside could have heard him. He waited and was about to knock again, louder this time when the door swung open.
