~Mycelium Stone~
Against the harsh darkness of the night sky, the moon hung like a shining eye constantly watching those that slithered through its hours. Amidst its reign in the sky the children of its grace were those of society's scorned. Hunger picked away like vultures in their stomachs while songs of death were all too commonly buzzing in their ears. Gentle sobs could be heard bouncing through the solemn air as yet another lucky soul was granted passage from this broken world. The cracked streets were filled with milling life forms too skinny and beaten by the lashes of life to even be considered humans any longer. Yet it was within this battered crowd of drunken fools and daunting drug users that Mycelium and her sister found themselves every night beneath the Moon's gaze.
Even now as Mycelium pulled her home made dress closer to herself for warmth she was always on the look out for business, then again there was always business for herself and her sister. Pathetic chants and irregular hoots from idiotic men followed them in their steps every place they went. Twins of the night were more than just in demand, they were craved. Still, Mycelium knew better than to allow herself or her sister to fall into the beds of those whose money wasn't where their mind was. Many approached but few were truly awarded with company of them back into their homes.
Ice kissed Mycelium's cheeks as chills ran clearly across her frozen skin. Snow flakes spun and swirled from high in the sky while all Mycelium could do was shiver at their touch. Winter was always harsher for everyone in District Twelve, with food scarce many died swiftly from hunger even though the coals burned warmly in their houses. District Twelve, it was a place where you could starve to death not only in safety but in warmth as well. Still Mycelium figured living among the disgusted here was better than trying to survive the struggles of beyond the wall.
Mycelium was pulled from her usual thoughts by a firm hand latching itself firmly on her elbow. Already Mycelium could feel her heart beat quicken as she turned to face a boy just slightly older than herself that she had helped several months earlier. Just by the stupid grin that emanated from his smug face led Mycelium to understand that he had returned for her and her sister's assistance once more. Even though Mycelium was quick sure he would have the money that her sister and herself required she still figured it was smart to check before bonding off with the needy boy.
"Well, hello again Philip what can my sister and I do for you tonight?" Mycelium asked calmly as though there was nothing that he could possibly be asking them for. No matter how obvious it was already.
"Actually yes there is. I would like the full deal just like last time. I have saved up all my money since our last encounter for this moment. See I even have all the dough right here." Philip said with his enthusiasm nearly reaching a point that Mycelium was more than happy to slap him for. Yet as he revealed all the money her sister and her worked for she couldn't help but nod in acceptance of the job. So with a sigh she took his hand and her sister's as they followed his lead into a nearby Seam house not unlike their own.
About an hour passed before Mycelium departed his house several minutes before her sister. Gently her finger's flipped through the money as her top teeth bite down slightly on her lower lip. Just as he had promised her all the money was in her possession but yet she couldn't stop the emotions that were stirring once again in her mind. Normally Mycelium had the power to control them but tonight underneath the ghastly gaze of the moon she felt tears brewing in her eyes as her back fall roughly against the side of Philip's house.
Several sobs echoed from Mycelium's mouth as she slid slowly to the ground and buried her face within her knees which were now pulled tightly against her chest. Questions after questions laid waste to Mycelium's mind as she let the darkness she was so use to living with eat away at her mind. Why was life so cruel? Why were we given this hell hole of an existence? Why do things never get better? Every last thought that crossed Mycelium's mind cut like a dagger in her heart as she recalled all the dreams she would never achieve. Every last thought that crossed her mind reminded her of the childhood and innocence she had lost. Two years of work but seventeen years of poverty and suffering collapsed upon her mind like a fallen bridge.
Warmth cut into Mycelium's icy cheeks as her tears continued to rain down her face in streams. Footsteps reached Mycelium's ears as she figured her sister was undoubtedly walking towards her. From within her buried arms Mycelium cried out softly to her sister as she felt the Moon watching her bitterly from high above the world it ruled.
"Why... why are we the ones who have to carry this burden for our lives? Why... why can't life just be giving for once? Why do we always have to give? When will it all end? When..." Mycelium felt her voice die off as vicious sobs racked her body with the force of a tsunami. Then in one quick motion Mycelium threw herself into the arms of her twin now seated by her side as she cried. Life was a cruel thing and for once Mycelium was done with the venom living only had to offer.
