It was time, the train had pulled away from the station, the Capitol -in all its glittering buildings, and flickering lights, disappeared within a heart beat, fading behind the concrete tunnels that flowed around the entrance. Blink once and it vanished, swallowed up by darkness once more, a haunting place that she'd be sent to every year until she was in her grave beside her past tributes. With a heavy sigh she turned from the window, fingers wound tightly around her sleeves.

It was going to be a very long ride home, with a train stop, and two more graves. She could do this, she'd done it enough times to have the routine engraved in her mind. The air billowed from her mouth, white clouds blossoming from her lips. Fighting back a shiver she stepped further into the train carriage, a warm beverage would ease the chill that would begin to sink into her bones. The train had a few other people on it, and as she moved towards the small compartment that would have food and drinks she passed by another open door, glancing to the side she hid her surprise as Leon's head popped into view.

Moving past she slipped into the kitchen, with two steaming cups of tea she exited, before slipping back down the hall towards the compartment she had seen Leon in. Hesitating for only a moment she spoke, her words soft, in the chilly air, "knock knock."

Each year winter comes and takes away his breath. The cold has once again found him and declared them both indefinite lovers; Leon sits curled on the hard windowsill with a blanket over his shoulders, trying to hold onto the dying sunlight and ignore the coming night. So early into winter he's exhausted to his core, life torn in all manner of direction.

Living has taken a toll on him; survival was easier, Leon found, when it was attached to something meaningful. Now he's got a distant sister, a boy whose love he can't quit or quit breaking, six graves waiting at home - one of which belonging to his own sweet brother - and two more to bury. None of that means enough to motivate life.

"Knock knock." Her voice drapes Leon in dread, and apprehensively he looks over at Opal Earnest, the woman whose future he'd inadvertently destroyed by living. There's no fire in her eyes, no appropriate accusation in the set of her jaw; Opal carries now a tray, and every line of her body tells of caution.

Somehow, she's not angry.

Quietly, Leon says, "Come in." He shifts so his back is to the evening sun, cautiously assessing Opal's expression. "Did you need something?" His gaze flickers to the tray, and back up to her face, curious now.

Living had been difficult, to say the least. It had reached a point where she'd have run head first into an oncoming blizzard, hoping to never be seen again, hoping the white whirlwind of life and death would freeze her within moments. but then Spring had come along. Spring had thawed her out, but the cycle had been vicious, only to claim her once more the following winter. Years of that cruel cycle had claimed her life, and now she wishes she could look back on those moments and tell herself the sun was buried behind those clouds, waiting for her. That it would never leave her again.

She hesitated only for a moment longer before stepping into the room. Her words cause a stiff reaction, but that was to be expected, it was hardly easy to walk into the room of the man that had killed your husband. But after all those years she had to, she had to look at hime and tell him it was okay because Potato wouldn't like this. If it had of been the other way around he'd have forgiven, and even though there was a bitterness to her heart whenever she saw him, she shoved it aside, for the sake of her husband and her son she had to make peace. She wouldn't live with hate anymore.

Her offering was pathetic to say the least, but it was all she could offer at the moment. Baby steps, she reminded herself as she placed the tray gently onto the table in the rom. "It's starting to get cold out, so I brought some tea. You look like you could do with some company." Offering him a smile was slightly more difficult as she gazed into his curious eyes, but she did it none the less, pleading with her shaking hands to still themselves, her aching heart to forgive.

Her smile is strained, but somehow Leon doesn't expect it not to be. What drove her to approach him today must have been a force more powerful than Leon's ever felt - than he might ever feel. If Siren were alive with him now, Leon can't say if the years that have passed were enough to forgive her for the death of Owen. He can't say if enough years have passed to even consider the thought.

To get here, I had to do it.

Even at the memory Leon feels like it's a little harder to breathe. And yet here Opal Earnest stood, before the man who killed her husband, with a smile on her lips and an offering of peace - or something that looked very much like that. Gazing at her, he wonders if he could ever stand in her place.

The answer in the echoes of his finale sounded very much like a no.

Opal, it seems, is a much stronger character than Leon could ever be.

"Thank you," he tells her, touched by the gesture. No, it may not look like much but with the cold sinking into his bones and his thoughts shrouded in mist, it's what he needs. He tilts his head to the empty chair by the window. "Do you want to sit?"
