Hello, my dear. What’s your name?....Elanie….Grace….
That’s a pretty name. How old are you?....thirteen….
Ah, so young. What district are you from?....six….
I see. Do you want to tell me your story?....no….
Then can I make one up for you?....That’s what everyone else does….
I look at the little girl standing in front of me, her gray eyes wide as she stares at me, not saying another word. She’s adorable with her dark hair tied into two braids on either side of her head. I would estimate that she is around 4’5” tall and probably weighs about 90lbs, that’s just a guess though, I’m not sure if it’s accurate. Oh, she’s moving, I wonder if she’ll mind if I follow her.
The place the girl leads me to is what most would call a shack, it’s small and probably only has one bedroom. From the shack comes a boy, maybe a year or two older than Elanie and the similarities between the two is astounding, most likely they are siblings.
How many people do you live with?....two….
And may I ask who they are?...My older brother....and older sister….
The boy, her older brother, takes the girl by the hand and leads her inside, beckoning me to follow them. Inside, the house is dim compared to the bright Autumn day outside and is surprisingly warm. I suppose it doesn’t take much to heat a small space unlike where I live where it takes a lot of heat to warm up the room.
What’s your brothers name?...Erick…
May I ask how old he is?....fifteen….
Their house is small but neat, not a speck of dust in sight, and everything looks polished, in fact, it’s cleaner than a lot of the nicer houses I’ve seen. These children might not have much but they take pride in what they do have. It makes me wonder as to what happened to their parents to leave them like this, in this tiny shack.
