The winter sun is beginning to set over the horizon. It's time for both us and the cows to start headin' home. Father's supposed to have dinner ready, or at least what little we have to eat, but he's busy helpin' the cold asshole of a mayor set up shit for the Victory Tour. And not only that, but he's dragged Jolena into helping him too. At this rate he's gonna brainwash my little sister into agreeing with him about the 'giving, benevolent' Capitol, and I'm not gonna be able to stop him. "She's my daughter, not yours," he'd say, and Jolena, too young to know better, would giggle - as if his way was the only way, but it's people like him that help the Capitol make our district into the shithole it is. I hate him, I'm sick of listenin' to him rant about how I can't learn to appreciate what we do have, and I'm not lookin' forward to going home just to be met with stale words and stale bread.
Two coffins, is what this Victory shit is, not speeches and parties and whatever people like to pretend to see when the Tour comes to our district. There's going to be hatred this year towards the victor, of course - Harbinger didn't have anything to do with Rodrick's death, but it was his allies who killed Leticia, and at least some people will be out for blood.
Revenge. That was a theme in this year's games, wasn't it? A fucking distraction, that's what it was. A way for the Capitol to turn the districts against each other so they didn't know who the true enemy was. It's time for the people to rise, to overthrow the Capitol that keeps bleedin' us dry and takes the fruits of our labor.
Even though we're armed with bullwhips, and the Peacekeepers with guns, together we can triumph against the pigs, the ones who show up doin' the dirty work of the Capitol, who seem to enjoy the violence they use as if we were no more than the animals we raise. And in their eyes, we probably aren't.
If I could only get my hands on one of the Peacekeeper's guns, you bet I'd be shooting them all to death.
I'm not the only one still out this late, though. As I ride along the fence, I spot another figure along the horizon, a boy, and as I approach I can tell that it's Rory Benstaloe. Everyone in the district seems to know and pity him, ever since his brother got reaped, but when I see him it just increases the anger I have burning within my heart, anger at the Capitol and the fucking president and everyone complicit in these needless deaths.
The town square, where my father and the mayor are setting up the festivities, is barely visible against the setting sun, and I catch Rory's eye, lifting a middle finger to gesture at it.
