Aster watched his father carry Willow up the to the back bedroom and lay her on the bed. His sister was pale and sweating, unable to wakr up for more than a few minutes at a time. Every time she woke up, she was in more pain and was awak for a shorter time.
His father stayed by his side, but forbayed him from entering the room, for risk of catching the illness. She was likely to die.
The pitiful thing, Aster though, was that it was an easily curable disease. There was an innoculation shot, and a medicine to cure it. Those cost money, more money than anyone in the seam had, so the disease ripped through and killed many children.
Aster refused to let his sister die. He dressed quickly, and put on a shirt with a hood, then left his house without a comment.
He tried not to run. Running would cause suspicion. He simply walked through the streets toward the doctors office. At this time of night, nobody would be in. He was counting on it.

Aster had the medicine in his pocket, leaving the doctors. But he hadn't been quick enough of silent enough or somsomething.
A peacekeeper was following him. Aster had no choice. He wrapped the medicine in a small dirty rag, and slipped as far away from the peacekeeper before hiding it. He made a show of going the opposite way of his house.
The peacekeeper caught up to him, and called backup. They circled him.
Usually the peacekeapers weren't the worst, not big on harsh punishment. But stealing from the doctor on the rich side of town...
They tossed him to the ground and searched him. They didn't come up empty. Aside from the real medicine, aster had taken several syringes and an expensive pain medicine. This would rake them off of the trail of the real medicine, which wasnt as valuable.
They stripped his jacket off and carried him to the square. Daylight was breaking, and people started noticing the commotion. They gathered around the scene.
The head peacekeeper announced his crime and punishment.
"This boy was caught i. The act of theft. He shall be branded as such"
He heated the branding iron, shaped like a T.
Aster struggled against the peacekeepers, but they held him steady. The head drew nearer, and when the iron was hot, held it against his skin.
Aster screamed in pain, then collapsed. They left him there, half conscious and still screaming.
The crowd dissipated, and Aster blacked out, vaguely smiling to himself. He would save his sister.
