KATELYN PERSIMMON
There were some familiar things in the seventy-second games, none of which Katelyn was happy about. Too many last names that already partaken in the arena. Quadrys Lexig was one of the ones that stood out to her the most, right after Iain. Septys, the career that had sided with Harbinger in the finale, If he hadn’t killed Someith before dying himself, Harbinger might not have made it back. And now his brother had volunteered. Katelyn shook her head. It appeared that district eleven was not the only one being punished. Perhaps the president was attempting to light a fire under the careers; she knew enough to realize what districts were supposed to win.
To the Capitol, her victory was a fluke. Kirito’s was an improbability. Harbinger’s was impossible. So what did that make a fourth victor? What came after impossible? She brooded on that as she made her way to the dining hall; she was having lunch with Opal, a meal to catch up on what they’d up to over the last year. And to discuss the seventy-second and what would come of it. Time went by so fast, and in a few short weeks, another twenty-three tributes would be dead, and Harbinger wouldn’t be the newest victor anymore. Another person would join their ranks, but as a friend, an enemy or the walking dead it remained to be seen.
From the buffet table, Katelyn piled her plate up with tater tots, pairing them with a heavily seasoned bagel slathered with cream cheese. The tributes were off, starting their training in the center, and her boys were somewhere, she’d lost track of them, but that was alright. She needed a moment before checking on Kirito. He had resolve now, and anger boiling beneath the surface, but he was still so fragile. She wanted to tell him that everything was going to be alright, but she couldn’t promise that, no more than she could have promised Harbinger that Annora would make it home instead of him.
“Good to see you, Opal. Hope you’ve been doing well.” She said as she took a seat across from the other victor. Opal was as radiant as ever, seemingly more alive than she had been before. Katelyn nodded at her reply as her eyes wandered down to her purse and the images contained within it. A moment passed and she drew an envelope out of it. “I – here, before I forget.” She mumbled with eyes downcast , sliding the envelope across the table. “I just, what we talked about last games stuck with me. I wanted to do something for you and your son.”
