Tommy didn't leave his house for weeks. Even when the stump was healed and no longer weeping and painful, he couldn't face going out and facing the world as a cripple. His mother took care of him as best she could, and seemed to forgive him, as far as he could tell, for being so stupid as to get in trouble with the Peacekeepers like that, but his Grandfather seemed cold and distant. Tommy was sure he hated him for the shame he had brought on the family, and the terrible burden he would now be to them. He didn't know how they were going to survive with him not being able to work anymore. Even if he could get off his bed and go outside, he knew no one would hire the boy who had the mark of a thief. Besides, what could he do with one hand anyway? The only work he'd ever known was working on the factory line assembling parts, and while he was a smart guy, and capable of far more advanced work, he'd never really bothered to try and find it or struggle for a promotion.
He was too down to go anywhere anyway. He lay on his bed, refusing to eat much so as not to add too much strain to the others, and barely moving at all. Most of the time he slept, hoping he would never wake again, and he would just slip into oblivion. Once his body was healed it became harder to sleep though, and he would lie awake crying softly, rocking his body with his arm cradled to his chest, and hating himself bitterly.
His mother became desperate with worry, and pleaded and begged him to get up, to wash, to eat more, but nothing seemed to be able to penetrate his mind. It wasn't that he meant to disobey her, or worry her, he just couldn't seem to find the energy to even look at her when she spoke, let alone follow her instructions. Most of the time he would just cry as she spoke, and pull his blanket over his head. It was cold in their apartment, as they were too poor to run the heater except on the very coldest nights to avoid freezing to death. But Tommy barely noticed.
In desperation Tommy's mother put on her one and only coat, hat and scarf, and went to visit the Saraceno house. She had never visited them before, and had to ask for directions, but she hoped desperately that Charlotte, Tommy's best friend for years and years, might be able to bring him out of his low state.
She knocked politely on the door and asked to speak to Miss Charlotte Sarceno. The house was much bigger than her own and she felt a little intimidated, but determined to do whatever her son needed to be well again.
