As soon as class ended I burst out of my chair. The overfull classroom was humid and stuffy, and I couldn't wait to get out of there. I pushed through the little meandering groups and pairs of other students and got outside as fast as I could. The cold, crisp, fresh air hit my face and relief hit my brain. I grinned at the feeling of freedom, staring up at the trees. The talk of my classmates faded to a buzzing of chatter in the back of my mind as I stared up at the dark, green, wild, wet, rustling of the tops of the trees, thick with leaves. As I walked further away from the school with quick, sure strides, a cold wind whipped over the schoolyard, and the trees tossed down drops of water over the students. Some of them flinched at the cold and pulled up hoods, but my face was still upturned.
It had rained while we were still in class. As my feet in their old, dirty boots hit the ground, they barely made a noise on the wet, packed dirt road. The air still smelled like rain. My grin widened and I rolled my wide shoulders, shaking my head like a dog as the wind picked up again and more water sprinkled down from the trees. My hair, now slightly damp, whipped around my head. It hung to my jaw when I stopped; I really needed to cut it, eventually.
I let out a happy laugh and a girl gave me an odd look. I was walking alone, because I wasn't really friends with any of them, and she probably thought I had a few screws loose. Well excuse me for being glad to get out of that boring, lifeless hellhole they called school. I kept walking and gave her the finger over my shoulder.
I shoved my hands into my pockets, suddenly much more aware of the students walking with me, down the road, towards their houses or after school jobs and away from the school house. The annoying buzz their voices had been was growing clearer; it was shouted conversations, and laughter, and complaining. I sighed heavily
My blue eyes scanned the crowd. I had spent a good bit of the school day annoying a few of them, to alleviate my boredom, and I wondered if any of them were nearby me now. Maybe one of them would be annoyed enough at me to do something about it. To "teach me a lesson, like I deserved." I laughed a little again. I would never turn down a fight. In fact, right now, I would almost welcome one. I had nothing else to do and coming home with a few cuts and bruises might mean my parents might possibly ask me what had happened. And they never asked me anything.
I bit my lip, my eyes wide and eager as they flickered over everyone. My hair flew into my face as another gust of wind swooshed over everyone, and I pushed it impatiently back.
No one came up to me. Everyone here was boring and passive and stupid. I started to resign myself to another boring evening at home...
