Night came both all at once and slowly, and falling asleep was not happening.
He kept picturing the deaths, all in a row, all by his friends. Noelia, Kite, Timothy. They were murderers by force, and it disgusted him.
What do people do when there is a gun against their back? They strike the match and let a fire burn down everything they know about themselves, because rebuilding an identity seems easier than burying a body.
He laid wide awake, the stars spread out above him. His friends had all fallen asleep after Dane told them he'd take first watch; after the irrelevant alliance earlier in the night, he didn't want to take any chances.
He wondered what Andy was doing right then, if he was still up, wrapped in his bed sheets and taring at the television in the dark, or if he was watching the animals that night, and happened to be looking up at the stars as well, or if he was able to sleep that night, or if he was too horrified about everything to ever sleep.
He thought about Paige, and how much he genuinely loved her, even if he knew he wasn't in love with her. He thought about what people's expectations would be if he were ever to return. He hadn't breathed a word of either of them to anyone, but the Capitol had still known about he and Paige. She was the sister of a victor. The day Saffron got that crown placed on top of her head, Paige got one placed on hers too.
Somewhere during the night, he finally felt the temptation of sleep kicking in, and he nudged Timothy awake. "You're turn." he said in a hoarse voice. Then he rolled over and went to sleep.
Morning brought on an entirely new set of challenges. As they traveled, Dane kept noticing pools of murk water appearing out of thin air, or tree limbs bending and twisting out of the corner of his eye. He knew what was happening:
The gamemakers were leading them to another alliance.
Someone new was going to die.
But his heart stopped when he saw the people they were expected to fight.
Standing before him, the crazy careers from One, the sister to Jeq, and fucking Noelia.
"No." he said under his breath to Kite.
"No, not them. It's Noelia's alliance."
But today, he wouldn't run away. Today, he wouldn't pretend they would all hold hands around a campfire and tell stories about their youths, or some stupid shit like that. He'd been childish to think anything like that in the first place.
He readied his weapon, and he attacked.
