The Hunger Games, it was a pageant they called it, but for most of the children in the districts it was the possibility of an early death. From the time she was a very young child Tessa was always interested in the games. She was never disturbed by the violence, by the bloody deaths, or by any of it really. That was until her little brother was born and she realized, he might have to go in the arena one day. The mere idea of that had totally changed her mind on the games, and instead of entering into the career track, she chose instead to keep taking on the tessarae and to help her mother keep their family alive. Her father had been ill for some time now, and it was up to Tessa and Danna to keep the family healthy and happy. As healthy and happy as they could be in their situation as it was. Her plan was to keep Jonathan from ever having to do that, so that his name wasn't in the reaping as much as her own was. She had two more years before she would be too old for the games, that was two years that she could keep Jonathan out of the games if she could.
The Games had started, the blood bath at the cornucopia was horrible as always. Tessa stood there in the square, her mother Danna had been the one to go to work today, so all Tessa could do was watch the games. Jonathan would be turning eleven next week, and as she saw some of the younger tributes having their lifes blood spilled she shuddered. All she could picture was that blonde haired blue eyed baby boy that was her brother being ripped apart in the arena. Her hands were clenched in fists at her side as she watched, the others in the crowd just as quiet as she was as they watched in horror. Year after year this, pageant as the Captial would call it, drew in viewers from all the districts. They had no choice in the matter. Some of the parents in the crowd had haunted looks on their faces, she saw one of the former tributes mothers crying in the corner of the square and her eyes fell to look at her feet.
The Games tore families apart, all for the enjoyment of the Capital, it was like some movie for them, not real people. It was sickening. Her stomach turned as she watched a tribute hacked into and she let out a small little scream as the blood began to flow. Tears welled up in her eyes and she pushed her way through the crowd, heading down to the beach, the one place she could ever truly find solace. She thought she heard someone calling out to her, but she was having a hard time focusing. It could have just been something toying with her mind. She had to get away, she couldn't watch the games right now, all she saw was her face, Jonathan's face, the face of the friends she had lost in the past, it was just too much for the blonde to handle.
