Lunchtime was such a waste. “What is the point of setting aside an entire 45 minutes just for the purpose of eating?” thought Archibald as he took his usual spot over to the side of the lunchroom. He sat alone, which was exactly what he wanted. Nobody ever walked over to him; nobody ever distracted him from his work.
As he sat down, he observed his fellow classmates, noting their actions with disdain. “What numbskulls,” he sneered, “Wasting away precious time on nothing more than trivial games. They’re nothing but a waste of space, a drain of society resources. Luckily, there are those like me who do what we can to keep us all afloat.” He was happy for a moment as he started to envision his future in his father’s military division, developing all sorts of innovative devices. His name would certainly go down in history as one of the greatest minds the district, no, Panem had ever seen.
“Idiot,” he berated himself, “that’s precious time wasted on useless daydreams. Keep this up and that’s all they’ll ever be, and you’ll be no better than the rats scampering around your feet.” Reaching into his bag, he pulled out his lunch with one hand, and his notebook with the other. “I’m not going to let an opportunity to better myself go to waste just because these impotent fools can’t concentrate on two things at once,” he mumbled as he set to work writing furiously.
Within a few moments Archibald was engrossed in his papers, the outside world irrelevant, all but forgotten. His lunch was pretty tasty, but for all the attention he paid it, he may as well have been eating sandpaper and nails. It would have made no difference to him.
