Fire!
Time ceased to exist as a silver bullet engulfed in flames spiraled towards him. Fear etched deep into his face, yet Iain couldn't find it inside himself to move away. His eyes locked on the fire dancing across the blade as it drew the wind in growing stronger with each passing second. It was almost mesmerizing. A rhythmic dance crept in front of him as the images of Delta and Cecilia swam through his mind. Both died in a raging inferno. Silent shrieks erupt past his lips falling on deaf ears because nobody cared anymore. The Capitol received exactly what they wanted. Iain Miristioma had fallen victim to a terrible punishment led by none other than President Snow himself.
One step after another, the fourteen year old stumbled away doing whatever he could to escape the inferno flying towards him, yet he wasn't quick enough. A twisted leg held him back for his entire life, and even now when he willed it to move, nothing happened. Everyday activities proved impossible. Climbing. Running. Walking. All Iain ever wanted was a chance to be like any other child, but that didn't matter because Cecilia showed him he was stronger than he gave himself credit for. A stumble backwards was enough to save him. The flaming bullet barely missed his face, and in that moment Iain thought he was safe until he inhaled sharply breathing a sigh of relief.
Blazing smoke filled his nostrils, his mouth, his eyes. The flame kissed his face slowly crawling inside him dancing from his teeth to the back of his throat devouring everything in its path. Violent shrieks fell from his lips as the smoke crawled deeper into his lungs slowly replacing the clean air flowing throughout the rest of his body. A steady stream of tears slid down the side of his face, and for a moment all Iain could do was stare at the two tributes standing in front of him praying for a miracle. Part of him wanted to hate them for doing this to him, yet the other part understood. In the games only one rule stands. Kill or be killed.
Danny walked towards him holding the axe in her hand - Iain prayed for a relief, a chance to find the freedom he searched for his entire life. But his prayer was cut short. "Please, I can't - I won't do this." Coughs wracked through his body as the axe fell from her hand splashing in the water. Please. Do something. Anything. But nobody cared about him. Iain was just another tribute who was almost a face in the sky forgotten by the rest of the world.
Kirito! Help me! Please! Don't let me die! You promised me. You promised. Silent pleas fell from quivering lips as the fourteen year old stumbled around still trying to flee the fight. Death was calling for him, and Iain didn't want to answer. Not yet. Not when his entire future was sitting back in district eleven. Tobias promised a cherry pie, however, Iain knew he wouldn't get a chance to taste it.
Spots danced before his eyes with every step he took until he couldn't move anymore. His throat was swelling together, and he felt his tongue growing larger - each breath barely passed through. Another violent round of hacking sent him stumbling forward. Arms spread out in front of him, and the sharp end of the harpoon pointing straight towards his chest, Iain fell forward hoping for a relief. An escape. Something to make this go away, yet the spear toppled over before his body reached the ground.
Tobias! Please! Save me! Kirito! Ikaia! Harbinger! Katelyn! Someone!
Forcing himself onto all fours, Iain tried crawling away in a last ditch effort, yet the grim reaper stood in front of him blocking his way. A heavy weight pressed against his fragile body until he fell face first against the waterlogged ground. Mud and water filled his mouth, and for a moment he couldn't catch his breath. The thundering of his heart echoed throughout his mind as he placed a shaky hand against the ground to help hold his dying body upright. Ragged breaths fell from his lips as he turned towards the two standing around. Help me. Please don't let me die. Please.
"Puh-please," Wheezing, Iain tried to get their attention. Hoping they wouldn't leave him alone. Praying they could hear him because nobody deserved to die alone. Iain never begged for anything in his entire life, yet there he was begging, pleading with everything he had inside him. "I don't want to die-" His words were cut short as another coughing spell took over his body. "alone. Not alone."
Kirito. Please. You promised me. You said you'd help me. Reach down and save me. Please. I beg you. I beg you Kirito. Please.
His vision started fading as Ezero pulled him to his lap. "Y-you won't. I'll be here. I'll stay." His broken heart plummeted against the ground. I don't want to die. I never wanted to die. Kirito. You said you'd help me. Why aren't you helping me? Iain knew the games were tough; he watched his own family march through them only two years ago - Kirito was stronger, braver. All this fourteen year old wanted to do was follow in his footsteps to make him proud. Have I made you proud? Are you proud of me? Iain would never know because his life was ending right now, and nothing would ever change what had happened. "I won't leave you alone."
A sense of calmness crept through his veins for only a moment, but his eyes were wide with fear, and his body almost as stiff as a board. Tobias, Kirito forgot about me. He's letting me die. He's letting me die, Tobias. He's letting me die.
"Tell me-" Between his labored breaths, Iain tried to find it inside him to speak. A last will. Something to keep him going. Something to prevent the grim reaper from stealing his life away, but even the broken boy knew his time was up. He knew the moment his name bellowed throughout the district square back in district eleven he wouldn't see his home again. Iain wouldn't sit with his brother watching the sun set over the orchards, and his heart broke over and over. Strings ripped apart inside his chest destroying the mold holding himself together. Tobias. I tried. I tried. I'm so sorry, my brother. I tried. I hope you see that. I hope you see that. "Tell me a bedtime story." He wheezed again, and Ezero placed a hand against his face sending every bad thought away temporarily until nightmares inched through his mind. "I always sleep better after a -" Once again violent coughs burst through his lips as the smoke continued making its way through his veins depleting his body of all oxygenated cells - "after a story."
"Tobias, I'm scared." His voice was quiet as he stared into the eyes of his older brother. A protector. Someone who cared about him more than anything in the world. Tobias raised a hand wiping the tears from his eyes. "Shh. Shh. I'm right here, Iain. I won't let anything happen to you." Knowing his brother was protecting him, the young child found himself feeling more relaxed, yet fear continued crawling across his body. "They got me. In my dream. They got me." His voice was filled with panic, and for a moment, Iain found himself breathing out of control. Fear and anxiety crawled across his body despite his brother's efforts to put him back to sleep. "I won't let them get you, Iain. I won't let them. I promise."
A small smile twisted across his face spreading from ear to ear, and the young Miristioma wrapped his arms around his brother drawing him close to his body before pressing his head on Tobias' chest. "Tobias, can you tell me a bedtime story? I sleep better after a story."
"Yes. I'll tell you a story, and then you have to sleep because it's late, and we have an early morning tomorrow."
"Thank you, Tobias. I love you."
"I love you too."
A single tear fell from his face as the sound of his ragged, labored breathing devoured him, and for a second, Iain thought he was dead. Darkness swirled around him, and the hand of the grim reaper beckoned him to follow, yet the sound of Ezero's voice brought him back to a reality. "I have a story for you, Iain." Iain prayed Tobias was standing beside him trying to wake him from one of his many nightmares, but each time he closed and opened his eyes, reality slapped him across the face. Tobias wasn't there, and Kirito couldn't reach down and save him. They both were powerless against the will of the Capitol. I know you tried, Kirito. I know you tried.
"Close your eyes and I'll tell you a story of a girl."
Carefully shutting his eyes, Iain allowed the weight of the world to lift from his body. Hopefully whatever Ezero had planned would become enough to carry him away in the ship death prepared for him. "There was a girl. She was beautiful, strong, and fierce. While everyone else cowered, she entered hell bravely. Soon hell's flames had engulfed her, smoldering and roaring over her skin. She burned alive, but felt no pain. When all that was left was ashes, a swirl of flames burst from her remains to form a great bird. From death, rose life. The girl had gained her peace as a phoenix. Then on, she could no longer be hurt by fire or suffer any more pain. She was free." Ezero squeezed his shoulder in a comforting manner. A river of tears streamed from his eyes dripping down his face into the waterlogged ground.
Somewhere outside the arena birds flew in the sky high above the trees in the sky without any worry in the world. Animals in the wild were free. People deserved the freedom the animals were given, unfortunately, freedom was a blessing Panem didn't come with. Freedom didn't exist in the world Iain lived in, yet somehow this girl from the story managed to find the freedom. Every deceased tribute found the freedom the fourteen year old was looking for.
"She was free."
"Ikaia what happens when we die?"
A twelve year old Iain was curious about life and death especially since Kirito was tossed into the godforsaken arena. Before this moment, Ikaia never said a word, and his eyes never left the screen as his hands wrapped around his Ma. "Do we go to a glorious place? Do we go to torment? Do we become a flower? A star? A butterfly? A bird? What happens?"
"I don't know, Iain. I don't know."
Sighing, the twelve year old turned to walk away. A heavy heart hammered inside his chest threatening to burst through his sternum and ribs at any given second.
"Iain! I'm sorry. I just... I'm scared. I don't know what happens when someone dies, but I believe you go wherever your heart desires."
"I can become a beautiful butterfly or a large, brave bird?"
"Yes."
Breathing became harder, and Iain moved around fighting to find a way to keep his airway open. Kirito, please save me. Please. I beg you. I'm dying. Don't let me die. Please. Using every ounce of strength left inside, the dying boy forced himself into a seated position until he was in a tripod position. Yet it never helped his breathing as it grew extremely ragged. Sounds bouncing between a stridor and wheezing escaped into the air, and at this very moment, Iain was barely taking in enough air to survive.
But somehow his blue lips twisted into a goofy grin.
"What did the green grape say to the purple grape?" Coughs continued wracking his body - the back of his throat was raw, and his chest muscles desperately begged for a relief for something to push him over the edge. But in that moment ghosts danced around him. Cecilia stood beside him holding her hand out trying to carrying him away from the hell President Snow had placed him in. Iain wanted to reach out and grab her hand, yet he wasn't ready to die. Lemon wasn't ready to die. Neither was Andesite, Carrita, Delta, Insanis, Hettie, and everyone else who fell victim to the cruel ways of the Capitol.
"Breathe, stupid."
Laughter mixed with coughing and wheezing fills the air around him, and the longer it carries on the more animal like he became.
Katelyn, please watch after Kirito. Give him the letter. You promised.
Vertigo crawled through his body, and Iain gasped for air doing everything he could to keep oxygen passing through the narrow opening in his airway.
"Breathe, stupid." Iain barely noticed the soft voice of his killer echoing through his ears.
Iain clenched every muscle inside as the blade of another knife drove into his neck followed by pain and a jet stream of blood, and many memories blasted through his mind.
"Tobias, I'll try. I promise."
"I tried. I tried to save you brother. I tried."
"I know you did. I heard you. Don't worry about me. Please."
"I've made you a pie, and I'll have a cherry pie for you when you get back home, Iain."
"Great! I love cherry pie, Tobias! I love it!"
"Harbinger, can I have some more of that secret stuff? It worked wonders." Iain asked holding an empty bottle in his hand.
"Yeah, I have plenty more. Let me have the bottle. I'll go fill it. You just stay here." A huge smile twist across his face as he gave the bottle to his mentor. Something about the stuff was amazing. Something made him feel like he was strong and brave, but what Iain didn't know was Harbinger was filling the bottle with water and adding some flavor to it with a bit of juice. "Here you go, kid. Drink up."
When Iain was reaped, he feared Harbinger wouldn't care for him, but this proved him wrong.
"Thanks, Harbinger, you're the best."
"Will you make me a promise? If I die, will you give this letter to Kirito?" A heavy heart sank deep into the pits of his stomach. Iain spent the night writing his thoughts hoping the letter would end up discarded in the trash, but the fourteen year old knew the odds were against him.
"I-yes. I'll get it to him if you can't."
"Kirito.. I'm scared. I'm so scared." His voice broke as tears fell from his eyes. A broken heart fell deep into the pits of the unknown. Yet Kirito embraced the broken boy trying to give him the courage needed in order to survive.
"The girl who originally wore this eye patch was Elya Johnwayne. She was unlike any person I had ever met because although she wore this, she saw the world clearer than anyone else. Now surely you are wondering why I am telling you this. Well the reason is because I want you to look ahead not thinking about what could happen but about just waking up tomorrow. Now I know you are scared and believe me I was too, hell I still am. I am scared for my family, I am scared for Katelyn, for Navya, for Harbinger. Its okay to be scared because life can be a scary thing, especially when you are lined up for the games. But if you try to look at it from a different angle, you will still be scared but you might also see something more as well. I am going to help you in every way possible Iain so when you step into that Arena there won't be any surprises. You are a special kid Iain and you have a bright future ahead of you. There ain't no way in hell I'm letting them steal that from ya. Got it?"
"I thank you for sharing that with me because I can see where you're coming from with it, and I'm going to do my best to not look far into the future."
"Come at me, Bro. Let's see what you are made of! Your grapes are in danger!"
"Oh I'm coming at you alright! And I will get my grapes back!" Slowly Iain forced himself into a standing position fighting with the weight of his lame leg. One foot after another, Iain pushed himself forward with only one thought on his mind. Cecilia stole his grapes, and he wouldn't stop until she gave them back. But things quickly turned downhill. His lame leg crashed under the weight of his body sending him tumbling towards the floor sprawled eagle, yet at the last possible second, he reached forward wrapping his hand around Cecilia's leg causing her to crash beside him. Grapes flew from her plate sliding against the floor. A burst of laughter erupted from his lips surrounding them.
"I guess nobody gets the grapes now."
"Thank you, Iain. You're a great friend."
A genuine smile twist across his face as the world quickly fade away. Black flooded his vision, yet the sound of his heart blared through his mind as blood spurted from the carotid artery. A simple phrase echoed through his mind.
"She was free."
Iain turned to Ezero trying to thank him, yet no words fell from his lips because his body went limp crashing against the ground. The world was still, and the scrawny kid from district eleven never heard his cannon sound.
Book one had come to an end, but two was only beginning, and in this new book, Iain could run, walk, climb, do everything he ever wanted to do growing up but couldn't because of his leg.
He was no longer the scrawny, crippled kid from district eleven.
Iain grew his wings and flew across the sky with the beautiful birds of the world experiencing the freedom every human deserved.
He was free at last.
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You’ve come to journey's end

Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
