Marlin Nobel
Walking home from school wasn't the best now that the sun had started its return to its usual angry ball of fire that always seemed to be the bane of Marlin's existence. He despised the extreme heat the district seemed to have most days out of the year, which is why winter was his favorite season. Too bad it had just ended. He could feel the sweat starting to stick to his clothes as he saw his 2 story home growing in the distance while he approached it. Why did I decide to wear jeans today? he thought to himself. He stepped onto the porch and unlocked the door, granting him access to sweet freedom from the oppressive heat outside.
There was no one else home since his parents usually worked long hours during the weekdays and his sister, Madeline, tended to get home about 20 minutes after him because she liked to stay at school and talk with her friends before leaving. Marlin ascended the stairs and turned left towards his closed bedroom door. Opening it revealed a well kept space, with a clean carpet, all his books put in their place on a shelf, and his notebook and pencils placed exactly the way Marlin liked them on his desk. Notebook in the top right corner, pencils in the left. He swung his bag from his shoulder, and went directly to the kitchen to finally get the glass of water he was dying for on his walk home.
What could be said for his room couldn't really be said for the kitchen. Dishes littered the counter next to the sink, bothering Marlin a little more than it should as he filled his glass with cold water from the tap. "Why am I the only one who cleans this place?" he wondered aloud. He had a little less than 5 hours left before the party even started, so he decided he had time to wash the dishes before he left and still get everything in order. No one else in the house did them the right way anyway.
What was going to be a half hour turned into an hour and a half, as Marlin cleaned not only the entire kitchen, but also organized his closet, putting his new clothes in the places they needed to be. He then picked out his favorite outfit that he was going to wear to the party tonight. A thin white shirt with blue sleeves that he rolled up to his elbows, and gray jeans to match. He changed into them right after laying them out on his bed, replacing the clothes he had sweat and cleaned in with the freshly washed clothes he had picked out. It was 5 now, and his parents would be getting home in about an hour. He needed to be gone before then. Even though he was 18, he still didn't have complete freedom as his parents provided for him and he was still under their rule. He didn't think they would approve of staying out all night at the beach with the kids that hang out there.
"Hey, I'm going out tonight. Would you mind covering for me?" he asked Madeline from outside her door. He knew she was home even though he hadn't heard her come in. "Sure, I'll just tell them you're staying the night at a friends house again." his sister replied. She could probably count the times she covered for Marlin on one hand, but it had worked without fail so far. Her brother didn't sneak out too often, and she caught on quick, so it was a good system they had. "Thanks. You're the best." Marlin said from the other side of the door. "I know." Madeline said back sarcastically.
After reading a book for a while, it was time for Marlin to leave. The party was starting rather soon, and his parents could be home sometime within the next 10 or 20 minutes. He put the book back on the shelf and headed down the stairs, yelling back to Madeline. "Alright, I'm heading out!" he said as he stepped off of the bottom stair, right next to the front door. He heard a noise in reply that sounded somewhat like an "okay" and with that, he walked out the front door. The sun was just beginning to set, letting the air start to return to a reasonable temperature. Marlin began his journey to the beach. I hope this isn't going to be like how I'm expecting it to be.
