a note from the desk of
Mace Emberstatt
when you never thought that it could ever get this tough,of District Ten
that's when you feel my kind of love
Klaus Goravich did not join them in the Justice Building library. He had every right to be there, and every reason to stay away. Mace Emberstatt had never quite forgiven him the sin of breathing.
It was with some degree of relief that Mace finally reached out and took Atticus Manor's hand. Another victor in Three meant that Mace never had to speak Klaus again. The cherry on top of this hell sundae was that after Atticus departed, he and Saffron would have nearly a year free of obligations, to simply be together. His heart thrummed, readying to gallop away from the misery and pain of meeting a new victor.
"Welcome to Ten," he echoed the greeting of many others before. It had already been a solid hour since Atticus had stepped off of the fancy train and onto the dust and gravel. He'd given his speech in front of a small crowd. No one in Ten had any particular bone to pick with the boy, no more really than Mace had with Klaus.
As was customary, Mace sat beside Saffron, both of his hands wrapped around her good one. He bowed his head when the attention turned first to the Allores and then to the Tibideauxs. His head may have stayed down a fraction longer for the latter. Their family had lost so much in such a short period of time. His mind wandered as the ceremony wrapped up. He didn't sleep, but somehow, he dreamed of Leticia and Noelia and Elon all together, smiling.
He never once let go of Saffron's hand as the Peacekeepers ushered them into the Justice Building for a private meeting. In the library, after shaking Atticus' hand, he let Saffron lead him to a worn couch where they sat side by side. "You want anything to drink?" He murmured to her, glancing at the refreshments the Capitolites had brought in.
Settled again with tea and water, Mace leveled his grey gaze at the newest victor. "Helluva journey from the Capitol to here, ain't it? How're you holdin' up?"
