Hell Kim
narration, says, thinks
She had come to District Four on a whim, volunteering last minute for a trip to the coastal District. Even now, she wasn't quite sure why she had made the decision. It was simply doing the same thing she always did - cleaning and preparing meals for others - just in the salty air of Four as opposed to the farms and fields of Ten.
No, it had been spontaneous, unplanned, a surprise even to herself. She wasn't known for her charity or willing to help others. She had shown tentative interest to visit other Districts, but only ever for exploring.
Still, she had felt a strange desire to tag along with the relief group to Four. It was almost like a gut feeling, like she had to be there, that something was going to happen that she didn't want to miss. And the girl known by everyone as Hell Kim hadn't stayed virtually unscathed from her many misadventures by ignoring her gut.
The trip itself wasn't all that terrible, actually. She was doing no more work than she already was in Ten, and got to explore a new, if somewhat damaged, environment.
And okay, yes, maybe she did feel a bit of morbid satisfaction that the usually wealthy citizens of Four were falling upon hard times that were common in outer districts such as Ten, and that she was one of the mighty few that worked to prevent widespread starvation amongst the district. Hell Kim had never identified as a nice person anyway.
As she stepped out the front of the cooking tent for her lunch break, the dark haired girl felt a sudden weight smash into her right side, knocking her off balance and sending her stumbling.
It took a lot to get Hell Kim truly angry, contrary to popular belief, and the crowded conditions of the relief center ensured that running into someone was a common experience. Regardless, she rounded on her assailant -a girl with long, light brown hair- with a feigned look of annoyance on her face.
"Yo, dude, what the hell?" It was meant as a teasing jab, carrying no heat behind it, and even if there was some chance that the strange girl might feel ashamed, Hell Kim was in no mood to make enemies that day.
