I hated the ocean when I was younger.

My mother wrapped her hands around my waist and planted my feet in the sand beneath the crashing waves. I remember screaming as white and blue rolled over my shoulders and sprayed onto my face. I cried when the sea salt in the water got in my eyes and mouth- that was when she carried me away, back to dunes.

I hated the ocean when I was younger- a part of me still does.
When I was a girl, I saw it as a beast. A living, breathing creature, made to be malicious, bloodthirsty. It still holds the image of a beast in my mind, only in a different form- the sea is an abyss. Dark, utterly consuming, pooling out into the far reaches of infinity.

The ocean is not living, breathing, and plotting my demise beneath its surface. But it is most certainly the gaping mouth to oblivion- its own new breed of monster.

And be warned, that if you stare into an abyss for too long, the abyss will do more than stare back at you.
