Gunnar Jove
Male
Twenty
District One
Heterosexual
Appearance:
Gunnar is striking, with his dark, intense, expressive, deep set eyes, framed by long, thick eyebrows. He has a wide, generous mouth and a sharply cut nose. He was wide, thick lips that are prone to turning up just at the ends, resulting in a small, knowing smile. He has a strong jaw, a round chin, and very noticeable, slightly rounded cheekbones, which give his face the look of a finely crafted sculpture. He has dark, thick black hair and brown skin, which tends to be blotchy and unevenly colored, and gets freckled in the summer.
Gunnar never was the bulkiest Career. He has wide shoulders, and lithe, wiry muscles corded through his limbs. He has long, pretty fingers, and long arms.
Gunnar has always liked to dress nicely, and he got even more stylish after he was too old to be reaped, because many of his clothes had been simply serviceable for training. Now he can put his parents money to use, buying hats and pants and watches and nice shirts and whatever else catches his fancy.
Personality:
There is little that gets under Gunnar's skin more than someone who won't pay attention to him, doesn't take him seriously, or just inexplicably doesn't like him, for no discernible reason. With his good looks and his parents money and his smarts, Gunnar is used to getting his way. He believes that people should do what he want and that he should get what he wants, in general. He doesn't deny that hard work plays a part in getting what he wants, but if he's already put in some effort and things still don't go his way-- he is not okay with that.
That kind of situation tends to bring out Gunnar's pushy, insistent, entitled, and (if he's especially ticked off) violent side. Gunnar is usually as sympathetic as he could reasonably be, having spent so much of his life as a Career, but when the less pretty side of him comes out, he tends to forget other people's interests and feelings in favor of his own. It's at these times that he's done some of the things that he is least proud of.
However, when Gunnar does not stand to lose or gain anything and does not feel like he's being denied what he has a right to, his sympathy can come out, and he's done quite a few generous things in his life. Things that he's very proud of and will not hesitate to bring up when he needs to.
Gunnar loves to have a good time. He can go to far with his alcohol pretty quickly, getting talkative and laughy. Even when he's not drunk, he gets very personal quickly.
He goes through girlfriends like new outfits, and the only thing he's ever really committed to is his Career training.
Responsibility is a foreign concept to him. He never learned it, being a rich only child with doting parents.
He's clever and quit witted and loves to argue and trade snappy remarks. He can speak delicately when he wants to, and lying and manipulation come naturally to him. He loves strategy and riddles.
History:
Gunnar is the only child of two people who've barely had to work in their lives. He had whatever he wanted growing up.The Hunger Games never bothered him. Rather, he was always fascinated with them, and knew from the time he was young that he wanted to win them. His parents were thrilled that their son wanted to be a Career, and made sure that he got the best training he could.
Mr. and Mrs. Jove were hands-on parents. Gunnar rarely felt alone or misunderstood or uncared for. He's grown to take his parents' kind of care for granted.
Gunnar was successful as a Career in that he became an extremely good fighter and made some good friends, but as the years passed, he never chanced to be reaped. During those years, he had plenty of girlfriends, and plenty of one night stands. None of it meant much to him and they've all sort of blended together in his mind.
His whole life feels anticlimactic to him now-- what he had been working towards since before he was of reaping age is now gone. Pointless. What does he know other than being a Career? So he's been spending plenty of time in bars, trying to live a little, trying to get some of his old enthusiasm for life back, but he doesn't have anything to live for. Alcohol is rapidly becoming more and more of a problem in his life but Gunnar doesn't care enough to do something about it.
Having his own place for the first time in his life does not agree with him. He's not nearby to his family and friends. Gunnar is used to having the maid and his parents and dinner on the table at seven and clean laundry waiting in his closet. He hates the silence when he walks into the luxurious but very messy apartment with no one to greet him. He watches the Games and pines after the days when he was a Career. For the first time in his life, Gunnar is lonely.
